Early to mid 70s in Jackson County, mostly in the Paint Rock Valley area. If you killed a buck of any kind it was a big deal . If you killed a 120 class , folks thought it was a state record. If you just saw one it was a good hunt.

There was no deer to hunt in Marion co in the 50s & 60s, or so I was told.
I was born in 1982 and we had to go to Pickens co to hunt b/c there wasn’t ANY deer to speak of around my house until the mid 1990s.
I vividly remember the first deer I ever saw anywhere near my house. It was a 6pt running down the middle of the railroad tracks in 1990 when we were on the way to school. Now it’s nothing to hunt at my parents house and see 10 doe at one time.
There are more deer and bigger bucks in NW AL than there has been since the early 1990s in the spot we hunt near Reform in Pickens co.
This is why I struggle to believe the Al deer population is struggling overall.
All the hunting places I’m familiar with in Walker, Winston, Marion and Franklin counties have WAY more deer now than they did in the early 2000s.

I hunted Coosa, Butler, TR Miller, Hollins, Barber Managements Areas in the 1972 to 1978 period Tree Stands were a new thing. Passed more bucks than harvested with the buck a day limit. Most 8 pointers were 2 1/2 and dressed out around 150 lbs .I know the request was 50's and 60', Just wanted to add a little to.it, .

I remember hunting as a kid and the places we hunted had no deer. I remember hunting all year long and maybe seeing one or two deer throughout the whole season in Washington county and George county MS. It was a big deal if you saw a forked horn buck. If you got lucky enough to shoot one it rode around on the tailgate of the truck for a whole day. This was in the early 90s by the way

When I was a kid in the very early 80’s we would kill maybe 5 deer a year as a family dog hunting. If someone killed two it was a great year! Those doe days were like Christmas to me as a teenager. Shooting a doe was like shooting a big buck today. You’d walk up on it and be amazed at it, because they were off limits. I remember my uncle cleaning the first doe I ever saw killed and he was almost mad. Shaking his head because she still has milk. It was almost taboo, but I smoked them during those doe days!

I started deer hunting in 1967, mostly Sumpter Co. There were a shitload of deer. Hunted Shelby some, if you saw a deer it was a good hunt. Jefferson Co...if you saw a track it was a good week...
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Around 1956 to 1963 my Late Daddy would take a long weekend trip to East Mississippi and Go on Dog Drives. Only once a year as HE was more of a "Budd Hunter". Told Me Details of how they told everybody to "Kill anything Comes through.....Don't Worry about th' Game Warden". Southern LAND-OWNER Mississippi Style. Said th' Dog Handlers/Drivers would come through on Horseback.... Must reiterate on the "Kill Anything that comes through" Orders. He told me that in the area they were hunting....the Deer had over-populated the area and were devastating the Crops. Hard to fathom a Deer Problem in 1955!! As a follow-up on the use of Dogs to Deer hunt: As we all know there were several years during the alabama revival of Deer hunting when they were few and far between. Using Dogs allowed them to hunt a larger tract of land and penetrate the thickest areas in hopes of finding a Deer. Also, folks didn't have as much free time as today......Soooo....when they went they wanted to make there chances as good as possible for success no matter what they were hunting.
