It’s none of my business but since you asked I strongly feel he should graduate.

Most of you missed the point that the kid doesn’t “enjoy” school.

The only reason to stick it out for his senior year is for his own personal enjoyment which it sounds like there isn’t any value in that.

High school is to prepare you for life and/or college.

If a person doesn’t plan to go to college, doesn’t enjoy high school, and can forgo their senior year and make a $100K, it’s a freaking no brainer.

Sounds like he is mature enough to choose. 100k vs. another year of racial issues, dumbass that bring guns to school. LET HIM DROP, a GED will serve him as good as a diploma with the career he has chosen.

There's a lot of threads on here about how useless kids these days are. The reason for that is the way they are raised. Parents and the schools plan out their life for them.

How many of yall had your parents make every decision for you until your mid 20's? I bet most of you made your own choices and learned valuable life lessons from the mistakes you made. Kids today are never given that opportunity, which is why they never really grow up. Do what your told is all they know, and we're surprised when they grow up to be socialists.

Sounds like the OP's son is aware of this and wants to buck the trend. It will teach him much more than any school will.

Be a shame to work hard to keep those grades where they are and quit 90% through it… I’m sure he can finish early but regardless I would want mine to finish high school. Never know what the future holds. You can easily explain no college (family business) but the optics on a GED vs a diploma is not the greatest. Just my opinion and worth the $.02. Maybe 🤣🤣

GED and the route he likes seems fine. But I strongly suggest he take some business and management courses either online or at the nearest JUCO.

I have 1st hand experience with this. I hated school. All I wanted to do was work. My Dad owned a millwork company along with a couple of others. I was raised in the woodworking business. Built my first complete set of cabinets from blueprints at the age of 12. Cut every board, did the finish work and counter tops. When I was in the 9th grade, I got suspended for 3 days for cutting classes and I changed the date on the paper to reflect 10 days. School called dad on day 5 wondering where i was? We had a conference with Principal and he ask what I wanted to do. I said work. He agreed to let me miss the remainder of the year (2 months) to work full time. If I liked it, I was done with school as I would turn 16 before next school year. If I returned, I would repeat the 9th grade. I never looked back. I was 15 yrs old, making $35K/yr. I worked 50+ hrs a week for the next 3 years. Got married and bought the company from my father at 18. Ran it successfully for 3 more yrs and then BAM! One day I was burnt out. Wife and I had everything we wanted but time together. I worked constantly. I sold the company and wandered around for a year or 2. Job to Job, miserable. I had missed out on being a teen/young adult. Missed the social experiences of Prom, Graduation, College, etc.

I got lazy for a couple of years. Then I got back in the swing of things, changed industries, and spent 20+years with the same company and held very high positions within that company without a diploma or a GED. 5 years ago, I left that company and joined an organization with the intentions of buying it. I did that in May of 2022 at 50 years old.

I typed all of that out to make this point. Your Son can achieve great financial success without a diploma or GED. If he has the ambition, and it sounds like he does. Just remind him to not get too busy making a living that he forgets to make a life. I missed a lot of my kids moments and was there for a lot of them. I carried a laptop and cell phone on vacations and spent time in the room doing business while my family was on the beach. They have never wanted for anything but, if I had to do it over, the only thing I would change would be the missing out on the social experiences. Politics aside, kids get a lot more out of those experiences than some agenda.

The thing about him is he doesn’t even work hard to keep those grades, he spends all his time making fun of his twin brother for having to kill himself to keep a c average. JT hasn’t brought work home since 6th grade.

Eclipse 829 explained it better than I ever could but I just recently went through the same with my son. It’s disappointing but after its done you realize it’s not the end of the world. I will say if he has any military aspirations it makes it more difficult. Couple branches won’t accept him at all. My son was ready to move on and he’s making decent money and is happy and self sufficient. I’m proud of him.

Diploma > GED…. It’s only 9 months. It’s not like it’s hard work for him.

Plenty of us didn’t enjoy school. I didn’t enjoy discipline either. Both were beneficial

I'd finish high school. It's only one more year and none of us know what the future holds. Just might come a day he has to work with his mind because his hands can't and that high school diploma will be very beneficial then.

Your son has a great skill set. There's no doubt about that. I wouldn't let him quit school though. Seeing something through to the end, that he doesn't like doing, will be part of his life, regardless of which career path he choses. I don't care if a man has a HS or college diploma or not, but there's a lot of people that do. Quitting school will follow him around forever.

$200k? Where’s he going? Harvard or Yale?

University of Alabama, Fall 2022, required expenses for freshmen -

Parking permit - $400
Meal plan - $2213 (standard, could be less if you apply)
Tuition - $5550
Dorm fees - $3050 - $7200, depending on availability

Adds up to almost $12,000 per semester minimum. Most kids graduate in 5 years, not 4, but that means the 4 year degree would be at least $100,000 with nothing extra.

I have a friend with a freshman son at Alabama. He tells me the real number is more like $25-$30,000 per semester, but I know them and their ideas of what is "required". They will spend at least $200,000 while he is there. And he has not declared a major yet.

My GED has never held me back. I got into grad school with one.

I wanted to quit high school but I was stupid and dumb. I only stayed in for sports, girls AND my mom and dad would have literally killed me. Looking back I am glad I finished, even though it took 3 years of summer school to do it. My daughter graduated a year early and was a freshman in college at 17. Is graduating early an option? In my dumb and stupid opinion, I would say graduate because he so close to finishing, I mean heck, you have the rest of your life to work.

I agree. I’m sure he’ll do fine either way but I would not want the stigma that comes along with being a high school dropout. Whether it is warranted or not, there is a stigma.

Just a thought. If he’s already that close he and in that school he might already have enough credits to graduate. Look into home schooling and he may never have to take another class and get a diploma. If he has to take a class or 2 it can be done online.

Now let the bashing begin.
