I would not base my decision on age. Age is just a number and maturity/wisdom/responsibility/character/demeanor/training all come into play when someone has ready access to a handgun. Receiving a handgun as a gift is one thing but carrying the gun around is another level.
I would probably just have him transport it to locations where he can use it but not keep it with him at all times. But ultimately you are the person who knows your son best.
With Alabama's new law I don't think you need a permit anymore so he should be good to go with the law Jan 1, 2023.

All of those are true.
He can get a cc with no help at 21. He can get a cc with some letters of reference at 19. After 1-1-23, he won't need anything so long as he is 18, and inside the borders of AL.

Don't know where you got this info. At 18 I walked into the sheriffs office, filled out their form, and got my concealed carry permit. No "letters of reference" either. Took about 15 minutes. Unless something has changed, that's the way it still is. The law is 18 to possess a handgun, 21 to purchase from an FFL. You can purchase a handgun from another individual (private party, no FFL) at 18.

October 2012 Guidelines <-- was 25 on your own, 21 with letters of reference. 2013 Revision <---dropped it to 18 I know I did several letters of reference over the years.

Life was more simple back when we took our guns to high school and didn't worry about it. Now, we worry about whether an ADULT can have a handgun. SMH Chit i remember Mobile county you used to have references from your Preacher and a few others just to get a CC permit BACK in the day
Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!

My boy pawpaw gave him a heritage 22 revolver a couple years ago. I do discourage him from running around with it too much. I dont care personally but i reckon the law would look downnonnit

I got mine back in 2008 right after I turned 18. Walked in, turned in my application and got approved right away. Those guidelines must have been county specific.

Now I had to buy the pistol for him as gift and he couldn’t purchase one at that time but he was legal to possess it and get his CC permit

My daughter is 18 and we went completed the forms and turned them in. In two weeks she went by the Sheriff's department and picked up her permit. The kicker is that her permit is not honored by other states until she is 21.
