I bought a 2006 Jeep Wrangler, ran great during the test drive, zero issues. Driving it home, the transmission wouldn’t shift (because the battery was dying) and the engine eventually went dead. It had a dead battery. I figured out the new alternator wasn’t charging at all. I exchanged the alternator for a new one, replaced it on the Jeep. It showed to be charging on the gage for about 5 minutes, then the gage hand went down and the Jeep went dead again.
The alternator is just not charging, what do you say? Could I have another bad alternator? Or some other problem? Thanks in advance, Robinhedd

It's not uncommon to buy new alternators to only install them and find out they too are bad.
Best thing is to not trust the gauge, but put your volt meter on it and see what you are reading with the engine running.

How old is the battery? If the battery is internally shorted, it could be drawing enough amps to toast the alternator diodes. Any corrosion on the positive leads to the battery? That could be another source of excessive amp draw on the alternator. The battery charges good, but doesn’t last very long either.I think maybe I could take the battery and the alternator to O’Reilly auto parts and have them checked. Thanks, Robinhedd

Also found out the alternator actually charges through the gage:

Well, I took the alternator off today, went to Oreiley’s and had it tested. The alternator tested good and the battery tested good. What should I check next?
