Im hunting near the calera area. What’s the prevailing wind in that area? My blind is dew north of the feeder. Should I move it or leave it? The bedding is due south .

That sounds like a tough spot to hunt. South winds during winter often come with warm and humid conditions. You might figure out if moving to the east side of the field is possible and then evaluating if a NW or W wind would blow you (and your approach path) into the bedding.

Youre in Alabama, it is certain to blow out of at least 8 different directions, during any 4 hour period of the day.

I had the same situation. Mostly hunt evening. Falling thermals. My wind was hitting the nearest drainage and going straight to where the deer were coming from. Bad juju. I moved my shooting house to the southwest corner, which put me one drainage over. Im not talking about a big gully either. Just a ditch but thats where the thermals take your scent. My shooting house is sitting right on that next ditch and it carries my wind away from the deer now. I never get busted by deer in or coming into that field. I get out of my shooting house and leave regularly with deer as close as 50yds and dont get busted. Air sinks as it cools. Imagine a thick fog filtering out of the area youre hunting. Just like water would drain out of it. Thats how the thermals will work. They will also overtake a prevailing wind. For your evening setup, i would highly suggest you focus on the thermals.

This is my big food plot. Deer come from the direction of the red arrows. The green x is where my shooting house was. The blue arrows are the two drainages. The yellow x is the new shooting house location. From the green x the thermals were taking my scent directly to the deer before they ever got in the field. I got busted all the time. Granted, the prevailing wind in the winter is out of the north. But even on a calm day or a slight southern breeze, i would get busted. The yellow x, where my shooting house is now, allows the thermal to take my wind down the ditch its sitting over. This has worked really well for me. Completely changed hunting this field. Also, coming into the field in the morning, before daylight, the wind is almost always in my favor. I rarely ever get busted here

Prevailing wind in winter should be NW .

Due to thermals, tree lines, and terrain, I have found that a prevailing wind doesn’t mean much unless it is blowing hard like right after a front moves through. I have to sample wind direction at each spot. In one place with a prevailing NW wind it may blow due N or due W. If there is a powerline or gas line involved, that changes everything too. I try to have a plan B when possible.
