Looking at finally going out west on an elk hunt next year
and I don't think I want to carry my 10.5 pound Sako 75
in the mountains. Looking at lighter rifles and found the
Savage in 6.5 PRC used at a gun store. Reviews seem pretty
good and its way lighter. Of course trimming 4 pounds
off the gun aint as important as trimming 40 off my gut
and ass.

It’s a Savage!! That’s all you need to know. Find the ammo it likes and it’s gonna shoot.

I bought one last year in 308. I like the gun it shoots great ,feels good in hand ,but i have never owned a bolt gun with a fluted bolt .You can feel the spines of the bolt as you run it . It might be normal to feel it ,i dont know . Maybe it takes getting used to it . That is the only complaint i have . I would buy it again

I've had one in 6.5 Creedmoor for a few years now. Just put a Trijicon AcuPoint 2.5-10x56 on it this year. Little less than 7 1/2 pounds total. I have shot a number of different rounds, since I've owned it, and they all shot well. Light weight, accurate, great trigger. What's not to love? [Linked Image]

Speaking specifically to the "110 Ultralight" with the Proof barrel.... I purchased one in 300 WSM this spring for the same reasons(light weight option for a CO Elk hunt this November). The features of these Savages are not great. Accustock is flimsy, accutrigger is garbage(mine failed multiple times), should come with a muzzle brake, rifle action is rough at best. HOWEVER---With the base options- the gun shot borderline MOA with 180 grain Nosler Trophy Grade ammo.

Since noticing these things--- I've replaced the stock on mine with a MDT HNT 26, replaced trigger with a Timney set at 2lbs, had a Salmon River Solution brake installed/timed. The rifle now shoots a SUB MOA clover leaf group. I'm very pleased with the rifle since upgraded. Been practicing out to 525 yards with great success.

My only concern with your post is the selection of 6.5PRC for an elk opportunity. Don't get me wrong, yes- that round is "capable." But, if your "finally" going out west for a long waited opportunity.... why not take a larger caliber.

It's a Savage with a premium barrel, should shoot great. I'd personally want more than a 6.5 PRC for elk.

I'll echo a few of the same things said by others, any savage I've had has been solidly reliable and superbly accurate. I also second the notion of wanting something a little more caliber-wise for a once-in-a-lifetime out west elk hunt. I've been looking into a western hunt as well so I've been grappling with the question myself and after doing a lot of research, studying ballistics and hearing from others who have been there many times I've decided my minimum bullet diameter will be 7mm (280AI or 7 Rem mag), but will likely be a 30 cal (300 Win mag) or even possibly a 338 Win mag, using heavy for caliber bullets. The main reason for this is because I don't want to have to pass (or worse, only wound an animal) on a marginal shot. I know there are plenty of people that have successfully hunted Elk with 6.5's (and smaller) but in many cases they are people who are local or go often and are willing to only take perfect broadside shots. I want to know that if I need to take a hard quartering shot, a snap running shot that may not hit perfectly or even a texas heart shot on a large bull elk that the bullet will make it to the vitals with enough energy take it down quickly and to leave a solid blood trail. just my .02

A Savage is a fine shooting gun. Much better than the cost would suggest.

Somebody is posting about the Savage of yesteryear …the 110 UltraLite is $1400. It damn well better shoot straight.

Yeah... Proof research carbon wrapped barrel. Nothing cheap about those units. I heard tell they shot well but I haven't had any first hand experience.

Better ? ehhh... But can't argue the old 110's shot really well. The most accurate rifle I've ever owned was a Savage 110 "Wild Thing" in 22-250 with a Choate stock from the factory. It was 800 bucks in 1998 but it would put 5 shots in one hole with about every factory load I ran through it. Never seen anything like it since.

I agree with yall on the caliber being at the bottom range
for elk. The one I was looking at is used and much cheaper
than a new one. I do think I will get a 30-06 though.
Thats what I have shot for several years and its plenty for
elk with the right ammo. I do see the point of something bigger
for shots that are less than optimal but whatever I buy will be
used here for deer and Im too old and tender for the recoil of
the magnums haha. A 300 that light would have to be a
punisher. A 338 would rattle teeth for sure. I regret selling
a 338 Winchester Super grade a few years back though.
Taking an elk with that gun would have made it even better.

Thanks for the input guys.

I'll go against the grain and say a 6.5 PRC is not undergunned for Elk with the right loads. I doubt most Elk could tell a difference between that and a 7 mag.

I have a 6.5PRC and I’d be concerned on elk. Sure, given a perfect broadside shot it’s plenty enough. What about a hard quartering away? Feel confident the bullet will make it to the vitals? If I was going on a once in a lifetime western hunt, I sure as hell would bring enough rifle.

Buddy has a 110 high country (not the ultralite) in 300wm. Have shot it. Nice rifle.

Having shot a hand-full of elk over the years and seen others shoot a bunch more, I think 6.5 prc will be sufficient for elk. You may have to pass on a particularly bad shot. But if I'm passing on a bad shot angle, I don't care how heavy for caliber bullet I have, its probably best to not pull the trigger.

Id be cautious with frangible bullets and shoulder shots close in with that non-magnum.
