GP outdoors on youtube has a couple of vids about how he and a neighbor modified is 3 pt spreader to cope with wet sand and it got me to wondering if I couldn't modify mine to do that with ag lime. The one he has though, has different gates than mine does.

He basically pulled out the "agitator" for lack of a better word, and added a section of plastic pipe about a foot long, with 2 chain loops that reach out towards the very edge of the inside of the spreader.

Mine is a bush hog brand, and I really think I need to take the poly hopper off and remove the directional plate and then put it back on. That doesn't really seem to work from what I have seen using it.

You know what else I think would work? One of those powered top dresser machines used by landscapers. They are designed to broadcast stuff like sand, topsoil and mulch.

You mean like a manure spreader? Titan has a small one I think would work, but the reviews on it say its a POS.

It's aggravating to try and do this when you don't have big fields. I have spread pellet lime with my 3pt spreader, and it takes a while, even wide open. I put a ton of it on a half acre field last year, and basically wore trails through the field going back and forth. Probably took me 30 minutes or more.

But dang, the cost of urea is so high, its really throwing $ away to put it out if your PH is really low, and mine is on new ground.

If you are putting out lime, as in regular ag lime, it’s not going to affect your soil ph the way it needs to till around Feb or March. It’s lasts a while in the dirt. Pelletized lime is going to get a little quicker results by about Dec or Jan. I’ve been using liquid lime for about a year now in my lawns that I do maintenance on and my greenfield for about two years and it starts working instantly and reaches its full potential in about 2 months. I’ll get a name of it if anyones interested

I have a 5 ton spreader that hooks to a tractor. The chains are different in manure spreaders than lime. But I’m about to try it and see how it works if I don’t change my mind

Mojo K20 is the liquid lime I’ve been using. Highly recommended by several neighbors who have been using it for years. We are also 35-40 miles from the nearest co-op so a buggy is a pain

Well we put it out last year and retested it this year and the ph was close to what it needed to be (6 or 7 in places) so this year we just added about 3/4 gallon per acre to re test, but to answer your question we usually do it before planting and fertilizing. I can post results later on

I tried some of that a couple years ago, but had a hard time keeping it in suspension. I bought a big paint paddle mixer, and ran it the whole time I was filling my spray tank, plus running the pump on recirculate and I still had alot left on the bottom of the tank.

I have about decided there is no free lunch with lime. The easiest way for me to do it is with a 3pt spreader. But its the most expensive. I'd probably spend $5K on pellet lime to do my fields if I was starting over at square 1 with ph like it was when I tested 2 years ago. High 4's to low 5's.

I think next spring I am going to buy a JR metal products drop spreader. 500 pounds at a time, and I can tow it behind my 4 wheeler. It will end up being faster, since I can zip around with it compared to a tractor.

It absolutely does work. I sell lime for a living, no not ag lime but lime for soil stabilization. I watched a company spread 6,000 tons of pebble (pellet) lime with a manure spreader.

Can you get it in supersacks ? What’s the analysis on it ?

I don’t know if they sell ag lime in SS but we do sell quick lime and Lime Dust in SS. There is a place McCalla that sacks it for us. They may sack ag lime if you get a load hauled to them. I will warn you that it increases the price drastically.

We spread some years ago with a 3 point spreader. I Jerry rigged a piece on the inside of the spreader to keep it stirred up and to keep it from packing at the bottom.

Update on the ez flow spreader. I used it today to put out lime. It works perfectly. Advise if you decide to buy one 1)make sure the auger in the bottom works 2) theres a gate on the bottom that opens and closes the holes, if you will be needing to go far without spreading, make sure the gate slides. Mine is seized up. Not a big deal to me because i was running back and forth with the loader keeping it full. But it is perfect for putting out powdered ag lime. Never thought about clogging.
