Another thing: Never judge someone's ability to buy something based on what they're wearing.
Probably 25+ years ago, my dad was on his way back from working at his house on the lake. He had on old shoes, ratty shorts, dirty t-shirt. Stopped by a dealership in Decatur to look at a van, one of those ugly-ass squared-off Chevy vans. Gets out, checks out the van, sales guy strolls up, etc.
Dad asks about the price. Sales guy says the price and then says, "You don't look like you could afford it, though."
WRONG THING TO SAY, ASSMONKEY.
Dad nods, says good day and leaves. Buys the same van in Cullman, with a check, for less.
I was fishing in south Florida in the early 90s and eating lunch with a guy. He points to a house across the bay, says it's owned by the son of the founder of John Deere. Opulent house. Waterfront. Gorgeous. Then he points to a guy at the bar in nasty flip-flops, torn t-shirt and shorts. Dude looks like a deckhand on a two-bit charter.
"That's the owner."
NEVER guess just by looks what someone has, or can do, or their desire.
Greg Anthony who was at the time manager of a dealership in Ft. Payne and I had a conversation about "judging a book by the cover". He told me the story about when he was a young salesman just starting out. It was a rainy day and everyone was inside . A ratty old pickup pulled up with about 4 people in the cab. They got out , none of the salesmen made a move. The owner of the dealership asked if anyone was gonna help those folks , someone said they look like they can't buy anything. Owner had a come-apart and said someone don't get out there NOW I'm firing the whole bunch. Well Greg went out and turns out that family of Hillbillies just hit the lottery. Daddy bought 4 new vehicles that day and came back for a new pickup every year after that. Said that was the best lesson he learned in car sales.

Car sales and dealerships have certainly made an art form out of wasting your time. Call me old school, but I still like haggling a bit when it comes to spending that kind of money. Once I know what I want to buy, if buying new, I generally send an email request asking for the bottom line out the door price to several dealerships in a 150 mile radius. I always state No Trade. ( Never trade a vehicle at dealership- you’ll always lose twice in that scenario) Their internet manager usually responds, some with bs and some give me what I’ve asked for and then you pit those vipers against one another. You’ve got to get them going back and forth to get any reduction in price and get your best deal. Once you have a reasonable deal then I go to the dealership and your presence and the ability to depart if you can’t negotiate the deal down a little more becomes a powerful tool. They don’t like you to walk away. If you piss a salesman off bad enough and they call you a liar in the middle the showroom, that’s usually worth an apologetic call from the owner and another two grand off the price if I would reconsider buying. It happened. Nothing, pleases me more than to turn the tables on a car dealership. My wife refuses to go with me as I embarrassed her at times. It’s war I tell you! And not for the faint of heart! $ is $

Probably a lot of grandfathers who are car salesmen and have "My dealership, MY RULES" attitudes.

I bought a Nissan Frontier few weeks ago and the sales guy asked about my Jeep and trade in. Told him I was just gonna sell it to which he responds they would buy it that they needed used cars. Fast forward to haggling on price of truck he told me they have a $2000 market value pricing markup over MSRP so I responded that oddly enough I have the same on the Jeep. Trade in value on my Jeep was $23,000, they gave me $24,500 because windshield had a crack. Put $4500 toward down on truck and they cut me a check for the other $20,000. I could have sold it on my own and got $26-27,000 but then I’d have to deal with ppl wasting my time test driving and any other number of excuses. Couple hours at dealership had new truck and check in hand. And I must say I’ve been very pleased with the truck, I’ve always been a Toyota guy, had the jeep for round down driving and fun til I sold my tundra last summer. The frontier is a good truck, pleased with it.
Finally deported myself from the peoples republik of Kaliforkistan.

I think the average person walks up, gets their payments right and signs paperwork. Guys like us are in the minority and I suspect car salesmen hate us as much as we hate them because we make ‘‘em earn the sale.

Haven’t a clue if they’re still that way since marriage and kids, though…hope not.

I don't play those games. I won't ever walk into a dealership without having an agreed upon number before I show up.
If they won't give me a number, I move on to someone who will. If they change the number after I show up, I leave immediately, no exceptions.
No games phuckers. My time is worth a lot to me. Don't waste it. THIS, YES. I hate buying vehicles. Hate it with the heat of a million midday suns in August. Tell me the price, answer my questions, don't add on a bunch of sh*t and "options" that aren't options. There's a dealership here in Huntsville that has a "perk" that isn't an option, it's a built-in price. You can't remove it or decline it or whatever. Such BS. Don't forget the tax-tag-title fees added on later ... um, no. Tell us THE price, period. Do those BS things and I'll leave. Phuck 'em. I have other options. Last two purchases we made were with Greenway Toyota in Florence. Great folks, easy, no problems at all. Worth the drive over there. We bought our 4runner PRO at Greenway in 2020.Great to deal with and i checked a bunch of dealerships including ones in Georgia to South Carolina.
