Anyone have one or used one very much? Wondering what kind of production is typical for a average sized, hydraulic mill. I know there’s a lot of difference depending on how your sawing and what your sawing. Just trying to see how long it would take to pay for itself over paying .50/bdft to hire someone to saw for you.

I just bought a used one. It a Hudson Oscar 28 with 18ft deck . It’s pretty old but I got it tuned up. It’s not hydraulic just kind you push. Lot physical work rolling logs. I enjoy the work an like the fact that I can saw whatever I want an not waste any. Got tractor I use to put logs on mill. I can saw a bunch lumber once I get log sawed into cants. Didn’t have a log scale with it . Just got scale this week. Anxious to use it more. All been sawing is cedar for home projects. Lots folks have them in my area. Most charge $.60 ft or $45 hr depending on soft wood or oak with a hydraulic mill. I did lot research on this an talked to wood mixer, Woodland Hills an frontier mills. Most all behind production. Frontier is a year wait. Wood mixer is$400 down an get in 8-10 weeks. Woodland hills is 4 to 6 weeks. Almost bought woodlands hill mill new till I found this one. Price is $3000 an up on all new mills according to brand an options. Didn t check on hydraulic options because it just a hobby for me. Think hydraulic mills over 10k.Not sawing for public. I’m a logger an have endless supply of any kind of wood . Thats big plus for me. Mill will save lot of money on lumber if u saw it yourself if u willing do physical labor .i have a planer an plane all mine that I use. Need look at lumber prices an compare I guess. Lumber is down over 60% since Jan 1. Last year was $1700 per thousand ft. Last week down to around $600 a ft. That hasn t trickled down to lumber stores yet but has come down a lot . Home building is slowing down an probably get worse so I’m assuming lumber will get cheaper. I guess answer to question about if it pay for itself would depend on how much you planning on sawing an building . An remember most bandsaw mills saw true scale . 2x4 are exactly 2” by 4” not like u buy that been planed down to 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 . Some builders don t like working with lumber like that . I built one my shops out of popular sawmill lumber an it’s held up well over 23 yrs. Heavier but sturdier. I would rather have sawmill lumber . Only drawback can t get it treated.

The treating plant in Lafayette, Ala. will treat lumber for individuals.....I know it's a LONG distance from you though.

Loading the logs on mill isn’t an issue but a hydraulic mill will save a lot of time in rolling the logs, clamping them down and adjusting the bed for taper.

I've worked around sawmills my entire life. Hydraulic mills do save a lot of work turning logs. What most people don't think about is the work involved in moving slabs and stacking the lumber. I've got a manual mill and 2 people can saw a lot of lumber in a days time.

If you have several building projects and plan on sawing for others it'll pay for it's self. I know the woodmizer Lt 40 is a 16 month wait. A friend of mine ordered one 3 weeks ago. It took 10 months to get my Lx55.

I don t saw for the public . Just myself right now. Like sawdust said u can saw alot in day time if u willing to work. I got tractor with fork an i park it on off bearing side of mill an I just roll slab on them while I’m sawing an pile them up to burn. The time consuming for me is rolling log with a cant hook an clamping it down. Must be lots folks looking to get into sawing if such long wait now. I talk to woodmizer few months back an wait time then was think 8 to 12 weeks. I enjoy mine an sometime in future I might get a big all electric an hydraulic mill. Friend of mine got a big woodmizer . His son got a tree topping business an get big huge trees for free. He making a killin sawing an sellin live edge table tops an mantels for fireplaces out of oak cherry an hickory on top of custom sawing he does for $45 hr. He 6 months behind on custom sawing . Thats one reason I got mine mill so I do it myself an I only gave $1600 for it .
