I am planning on building around a 14’ layout type duck boat. Planning on using around 1/4” plywood for the bottom. Anyone have experience with waterproofing/sealing an all wood boat and what would you use? I’d rather not mess around with fiberglass if at all possible. I suppose some type of epoxy

I built a few around 25 years ago.
If you are using Exterior grade ply, then just use Red Barn outdoor acrylic paint and put about 3 or 4 coats on. Some caulk in the seems will also help.
Any way I paddled a pirogue I made from Tallassee to Mobile.

I built one about 10 years ago, I think I got the plans off of The Refuge. Killed a pile of canvasbacks out of it on a long line before I eventually sold it. I’ll try’n see if I can find the blueprints for it.

I built one. Used fiberglass and epoxy over Luan plywood. Used wood flour and epoxy in joints. It is bomb proof, and weighs about 60#, I'd guess.

Cajun Pirouge. Stained it and used a two part epoxy and fiber weave.
It was fun to build, the flat bottom makes it stable and it drafts shallow. I added an extra rib, rub rails, and a keel to help it track straight. PM me with your number if you want me to send some pictures.

I have built a layout boat. Mine was fiberglass over plywood.

I have built one. We used stainless screws and gorilla glue, moistening the surfaces to make it expand. That was 15 years ago. My buddy just sent me a picture of it the other day. Still looks good, and he was putting a new motor on it.

I remember that, it was an aluminum boat.

I have the pirogue that TC built, got it in a trade for a Native tandem kayak I had.

I push poked a pirogue many miles back in my younger days. That’s was one of the main mode of transportation before the fancy surface drive motors came out. These pics were from the late 80s or early 90s.

I helped my dad build one when I we lived in California. He built them out of plywood, glued them together with some kind of resin. He covered the outside with fiberglass cloth then painted over it with liquid fiberglass. Dssid a lot of duck hunting and frog gigging out of that boat.

Does a door tied on to two tractor tire tubes with bailer twine count? If so, then yes! It floated.

The aluminum boat guy also forged some knives. Someone built a fiberglass over wood boat and tested in the lake at their subdivision. I remember it but it was years ago. I lurked for years before I got drunk and joined and started posting with all weirdos.
