I’ve had a smaller size Traeger since 2014. Really liked the ease of a pellet smoker.

I went to Lowe’s to look at the sale they have on them this morning and I got lucky. Ended up getting the Pit Boss Pro Series 850 for a heck of a deal. Had a small dent on the handle at the end of the hopper, I got 10% off of sale price for that. With sale price, 10% off and military discount, I walked out the door at $474.

Just got done using it and I like it. Don’t know if I’ll use all the features but so far so good.

I have that same model. I love it. I don’t use all the features on it but I got a good deal on mine as well so I didn’t mind buying it with all the extra features.

I sold my Traeger and bought a Pit Boss. You'll like the Pit Boss , they cook hotter. I just smoked some jerky on mine today.

I’ve had 3 issues with my pit boss. They need proof of purchase but no problem they fixed me right up. Great customer service. Lid was sticking closed when it cooled I mean getting a screw driver to get it open. (Sent me a new handle and lid) Temp was not reading what it said ( sent me a new thermometer and a probe that hooks into to computer board) last thing the auger would turn but no fire (sent me a me a new igniter). Yes I had to chang them out which a man needs to know how to work on a few thing to get it done.but I say it has fixed me up!!!! I have only used the bit boss competition blend pellets which seem to do great

I picked up a PB combo cooker this weekend too. I have to learn it so I've been cooking on it quite a bit. Perhaps I got used to the heavy smoke from my BGE, but this thing barely puts smoke out. I've read that good smoke is nearly clear, so perhaps that's my issue. I just don't see it. Smoke some chicken thighs and I couldn't taste the smoke. I'll keep at it. Curious to know if the temp gauges and the processor are sync'd. Controller said smoker was at 250, but a probe hanging inside came back about 40 degrees cooler.

Put a 9lb butt in 1hr ago and set the pitboss to 225. The manual thermometer indicates 25 higher on ours all the time. It should be over 190 internally in 12hrs and another 3hrs of rendering should have her done and moist.

Added: cut into the surface and rubbed spicy brown mustard in the covered with Butt Rub and a very light dusting of cayenne. I’m using apple traegger pellets.

I have an old charcoal grill/smoker. Played hell today keeping all the food smoking at the right temp. Had to baby the damned thing constantly, primarily because it's so small. Done with it. I started looking at some of the pellet smokers. Haven't really studied them yet. I'm looking at one that has the dial for setting the temp.

Can they also be used to grill food, or only to smoke?

I have a pit boss and love it. Grilled a few cowboy ribeyes on it last night. When I grill on it I crank the temp up, leave it low when smoking.

Dangit, y'all gonna make me spend some money. I've got an Egg but I rarely use it. It's just too much trouble to fool with. It's never worked exactly right. Hard to light, hard to control temp, etc... No air leaks that I can find, but there's something not just right about it. I want to buy a pellet grill and sell the egg, but the wife wants to keep the egg, which she has never, one time, cooked on, "but one of the kids might want it when they get out of college."

I use a looft lighter and light the egg in a “5” pattern just like you see on a dice. I used mine for 6 hours the other day and held 350 degrees for the entire time (digiQ assisted of course). I have a traegar and it’s definately easier but the egg smokes more. Also got these whisky barrel chunks from academy and they smoked like crazy.

Pellet grills are mighty easy. Nothing easier for a Butt. Just put it on 225-250 , fill the hopper and cook it an hour per pound. I like to put mine on about 9-10 PM and go to bed, take them off first thing next AM. Don't get any easier.

We wouldn’t have one if the eldest son hadn’t found a deal on a used Pit Boss. But I’m mighty happy with the results on butts. We’ve cooked corn bread and cowboy meatloaf as well as burgers with ours. Need to do some corn on the cob, ribs and a pizza sometime maybe.
