Between my wife and myself, we have one every weekend in May that we attend. It is just something that I have done all my life, I am 58 now, and enjoy going, when I was a twenty something I thought it was corny but always went out of respect to my parents. I broke my back April 28 and haven’t felt like traveling and have really missed it.

I wish it was done on Saturday , 3/4 the ppl don’t come in the church house , they could come in and then go back out in the cemetery and visit . To me it’s disrespectful to have the word of God being preached and many Christians outside at a social event visiting while a church service is going on inside . I’m not against it but I’ve got qualms with parts of it . Our attendance goes down terrible in May and I don’t understand why it can’t be done in many cases in the afternoon or on Saturday.

Still a big tradition on Sand Mtn !

Yep coach g, I've been to decorations the last 3 weekends, and one more to go next weekend. Its about tradition and respect.

I wrote a story years ago about decoration day. I'll post it up if I can find it.

There's nothing in a grave but a body. Everything that made the person who they were (the spirit) is gone. I remember when Dad died.The paramedics wheeled him by us and his eyes were open and glazed. I realized then he was gone and only the shell was left. I look at graves the same way. They hold an empty house that will never be occupied again.

I grew up going to them. I respect the opinion of others that they're a special event, but to me it was nothing more than a month of missing church services to stand around and talk to family that I see once a year about how badly we all need to get together, then everyone says, "Y'all need to come over soon." but nobody ever does. Waste of time to me. They're gone. They aren't there in spirit, so I don't see the point.

Shows how different we are. I stood there a week after we put him in the ground and felt cold and empty. Stopped by the farm on the way home and walked out into the middle of the field and felt what you feel. Incidentally a yellow butterfly flew all around me that day and to this day I always say “hey Pop” and smile when I see one. Just gods little reminder I guess.

Its big with my whole family but me..i dont go no more..i never understood it, and still dont..i aint got a problem with it..but..it just feels like worshipping the creation and not the creator..dont cry for me..this world is cursed..an ill be better off when im gone..dont care what you do to me..ive returned to the dust i came from..an i aint here no more

I still make sure my wife has new flowers for mothers day and on her birthday. Do not attend the decoration days and find myself going down there less and less. Mainly when the kids want me to go. It's not a place I want to be and there's lots of places I have better memories of her.

That place looks really special Josh. I have the same feelings you have for my best friend that lost his battle with cancer fifteen years ago. Whenever I go to the place we hunted together is where I feel his presence. I talked to him and then out of no where a butterfly or bird will appear really close to me like it knows me.

That’s it! My grandmother, who still attends Decoration as all older Baptist women do, feels the same way. She goes to socialize but will tell you straight up he’s on the farm with her daily.

I grew up going to them. We would hit all the different ones where family members were buried. It was basically like family reunions. I never have been a fan, just as going to funerals. I don’t care for it, I like to remember people from when they were at their best in life. The older generation is dieing off and I wonder if the younger ones will carry it on in the future.
