So I was thinking about the best concert I've ever been too and decided I'm not much on concerts. I've seen Hank Jr. a few times and and Travis Tritt and Charlie Daniels and Lynyrd Skynyrd and a few others but big concerts in large venues are just not my thing, even if it's a band I really like.

Some of my favorite live music performances have always been in smaller venues like local dive bars. Most of the live acts I've seen all took place back in my college years in Tuscaloosa. But some of the better performances were Roger Creager, Pat Green, and David Allan Coe (all in the same small venue--but not at the same time). These guys played in a bar on the strip that probably help 200-300 people at the most.

But my all-time favorite live music experience will always be Wayne Mills on Tuesday nights at Harry's Bar. Sometimes it would just be himself. Other nights it would be him and maybe his lead guitarist. These were always the best performances in my opinion. I'd take a Tuesday night at show at Harry's over any packed out stadium concert any day of the week. Just curious if any other members may have experience a Tuesday night at Harry's back when Wayne Mills was in his prime.....

I saw him several times in his prime but never at Harry's. I was at Auburn at the time and we had several friends at U of A. One of our good friends was one of his long time roadies so we got to hang out with Wayne a couple of times. He actually came over and played in the house we were renting in Auburn after a gig but I, regretfully, was not there for that one. He was one of a kind.

Never made it to Harry's but saw him several times in Marion after the rodeo back in the day. Also saw him a good bit back in college, and occasionally in Selma at Warren's. He was such a nice dude, and one of my favorites.

The Harry’s paint bucket comes to mind. Drank my share of those back During the college years. Wayne mills name is familiar but think I saw him somewhere besides Harry’s. There was a guy that use to play a lot at flora bama think he has passed now not sure. Big concerts were not my thing

The Wayne Mills Band traveled all over. I know they played the Florabama as well as venues in Auburn and other college towns. But at Harry's on tuesday nights it was usually just an acoustic performance with him and his guitar. And yes those buckets of red punch at Harry's would sneak up on you in a hurry!

Not Wayne Mills but definitely a small venue when I saw Lee Greenwood at a company party (Guntersville State Park Lodge) . It was a pretty good performance. Also saw a couple of good bands during trade show conventions over the years at bigger venues but small crowds. My oldest brother mentioned something about seeing Lenyrd Skynyrd in Jacksonville at a bar in their early years.

My previous wife had a company dance where they had The Guess Who, The Association, Spinners, and the Drifters performing. This was back in the 90s. They were all fantastic.

MolyPoly, I'm sure we crossed paths at some point then. I would have been a regular customer from '99-'03.

I saw Wayne Mills Band several times at Sammy T's in HSV many years ago. He always put on a good show & had a good crowd.

Probably so. My friend that usually wanted to go see Wayne play, went to GHS Class of '99.

I was about to say, "Tell me you went to college between '98 - '04 without saying you went to college between '98 - '04"

Wayne Mills & Rollin' in the Hay marked many a weekend for me, and I never recall a bad one.

Hippie,

You nailed it. Rollin' in the Hay would probably be my second favorite band to go see back in the day.

My uncle used to throw a big party every year to commemorate, Mr. Shorty Carpenter. Mr Shorty lived on the same 60ac his whole life and lived off the land without power or running water up until 2002, when he passed away in his late 80s.(he didn’t even know how old he was) Wayne Mills played there annually up until he was murdered by that soft joker in Nashville. For 11 years we had some great times and he spent a lot of time he didn’t have to with us “young bucks” giving us advice about college ball and what not. It was a tradition to get his bus driver too hammered to drive them back home so he had to stay and hangout. I still remember that big joker crawling back up to his cabin on all fours wearing his feathered up cowboy hat after a long light of boozing lol RIP Wayne.

I was there many Tuesday nights watching him from 99-04 or so. First date with my wife we went to City Stages in Birmingham then back to Tuscaloosa to watch him at the Back Porch on the strip.

Small world. Same time frame for me, too.

Y'all have brought back some memories with this thread. Hard to believe it's been 20yrs
