I am going to be making a V shaped food plot in the middle of a grown up cutover. For those that have done something similar how wide would you make the lanes. One lane will be about 250 yards long and the other will be about 200 yards long.

100’ to 50’. Don’t have to plant all of it but clean it up enough to bush hog the sides.

It be's that way sometimes.

If I can get a video to load, I did a new one this year.

I do “lanes”, not fields.

At least 200 yards wide.

Make it as wide as you think you’ll ever want to plant for the future. You don’t have to plant all of it, but keep that option open. Can always plant the center and leave a buffer of native vegetation and escape cover along the perimeter. With the rising costs of seed/fertilizer planting fewer acres and managing open fields as is may be on the rise.

I did something similar a couple years ago but I did mine in the shape of a turkey foot. I had a guy with a 300hp forestry mulcher come in and make it. Each lane is about 18-20 ft wide with the center lane about 200 yards long and the 2 outside lanes about 100 yards long. The deer absolutely love this food plot and I dont think I went there a single time last year that I didnt see a deer.

Nice !! Miss him in one lane, catch him in the other.
Hunted a place in Red Banks, MS. Shooting lanes weren't as wide. You used one lane to spot the deer and the next one to set up and bust him. Good Luck.

When those pines start getting taller and taller, the
growing area will get smaller and smaller.
Shade from the trees will reduce the sunlight
hitting the ground.

We take out the trees on each side of the lanes at first thinning “usually”. Depends on how it looks at the time. Sometimes we take out every other.

Depends on your future plans & height of weeds? If it is a lease for a year or 2, 50 foot is fine. If this is a long term thing and you need to consider how high/big the tree are going to get that are in the surrounding clear cut. Large trees will take up ~20ft of your foot plot. There is no need to plant the edges, just mow them and let the weeds grow.

You also need to take into account the direction of your lanes. If a plot is running east and west the south side of that plot, if there are trees, will not grow well in the late fall. You may lose 20-40ft of the plot depending on the height of the trees.

As was mentioned above - 50' wide will leave you about a 20' strip growing after the adjacent tree limbs grow over the edges. Make it as wide as you want to plant, then another 10'15' bush hog strip on each side to keep the shade back

Try Universal over in Trussville. They are usually cheaper than the Co-op.
