We're starting to kick around the idea of getting another doberman...our last one passed a few years ago and we're finally ready to at least think about another one. Curious if anyone knows of any quality breeders in the Southeast US. Unfortunately it seems like about 75% of the dobermans you see lately, at least around here, are not very "good" representations of the breed, so I want to start doing my homework in advance...

My 2nd favorite breed Gomer. Beautiful dogs. I had one growing up and into high school, and then MrsGomer and I got one about a year before we got married that we had until a few years ago. I'm pretty partial them. Funny story... when I was little all the way until my Freshman yr of college, my grandparents had a concession stand selling Chocolate-covered frozen bananas and one of the places they worked every year was the Midsouth Fair in Memphis. They would take their camper and stay there the entire time and the rest of us would go help in the evenings and on weekends, and the camper gave us somewhere to chill out. We would take our doberman with us and let her hang out in the camper so she wasn't locked up at home all day, but one Saturday, she got loose and decided to come find us. Now, the fair would have a different musical act every day, and some were more, uh...urban...than others. On this particular day, the crowd was especially...urban. So, imagine if you will, a crowd of THOUSANDS of black folks standing nearly shoulder-to-shoulder when a full-grown doberman comes running into the crowd at a full-sprint. It looked like Moses parting the Red Sea. People were screaming, folks pushing one another nearly starting a stampede, women snatching up kids to keep them from being devoured....and here she came running right through the middle of them, all the way across the fairgrounds from the camper to the concession stand, and she came running up just wagging her little nub of a tail and I swear it looked like she was grinning.

I love the look of a Doberman. I prefer the European Doberman over the American. A Doberman is supposed to be an intimidating dog. I generally prefer them to have a bit of a mixture of American and European bloodlines, in terms of build and appearance. Dobermans were originally bred to be a "medium-size" dog, and were originally described as "sleek". I like the looks of some of the European bloodlines but it seems like many of them have gone overboard in breeding for size and bulk, because a lot of buyers seem to think bigger is always better. Many look almost like a doberman/rottweiler mix. This is kinda the ideal "build" for one, in my opinion.

I'll be in the same boat soon. My dobie will be 13 in a couple of weeks and is on the downhill slide. I've had dobermans for over 25 years and can not find a good source for a new one. Might have to go a different route and get a foo fooy dog.

I like a Doberman. But if you’re looking for another dog look at a risenschnauzer/Giant schnauzer or Black Russian terrier
We went with the schnauzer and he’s been a great dog. He’s almost 4. Supposed to be very protective of family and loves kids.

Gomer, one of my neighbors here in Chelsea is a breeder of quality Dobermans. Has been for a couple decades. Susan Rochester http://www.blackjackdobermans.com

It takes it's toll on the breed after awhile. I wondered how long it would be before you got another one.

Too bad I cant give you the breeder because we got him from a neighbor that didnt have enough space for him. Great dogs.

When I was a kid. A lady down the road had 2 beautiful ones, she would let in her fenced in backyard. There was a dim road that went behind that row of houses. I would ride my bike through there. It didn't matter how fast I was going. If them things were out, they would intercept to the fence and run alongside. The athleticism and speed always impressed me. She had a sign outback that said. " I can make it to the fence in 2.5 seconds, can you?"
