I seen that yesterday. I was young but remember him in the backfield with Bo.

I have a friend that played on that team at AU. Lots of good players in that era, but he talks up LJ more than any other. Coach Dye dang sure thought highly of him. To me, Dye was consistent about the players he spoke about often. Didn’t mean you were the most talented or the best, but if he was talking about, you were wired a little different. He saw “toughness” in some and acknowledged it.

RIP Little Train.

Lionel has been living a troubled life for many years due to the bottle.

He was great in his prime, and he was the one that got a lot of attention because he got through college without being able to read.

Nah, that was James Brooks, I believe.

I think you are correct. One of them around that time period couldn't even spell their own name and signed an NFL contract with an X.

James Brooks was the illiterate one. Lionel James was a heck of a guy and very popular on campus when playing at Auburn. After he left pro football he coached at Auburn during Terry Bowden’s tenure as AU head coach. He also was a pharmaceutical rep for quite some time, which requires a great personality.
He really toted the water as a 5’6” tailback and in my opinion was the best running back inch for inch to ever play at AU. RIP “ Little Train”!

^^^^ Tommy Agee - one of AUs best all time fullbacks made the same statement. I had forgotten he coached w Bowden - he was always very popular
