This has become my favorite Christian song because it really emphasizes the grace that was shown me despite the depth of my sin. Several years ago, the Liberal wing of Presbyterianism, PCUSA, contacted the original songwriters and wanted to change the words, "Till on that cross as Jesus died/the wrath of God was satisfied.” For this they wanted to substitute: “…as Jesus died/the love of God was magnified.”

Its important for all to understand that, while not popular, we are indeed rebels who are deserving of God's wrath because of the depth of our depravity. Jesus's death was the only thing that could pay that penalty of the wrath that we all deserve. A complete understanding of the Gospel includes understanding how His wrath is used with His love.

In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied;
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid—
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain;
Then bursting forth in glorious day,
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory,
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;
For I am His and He is mine—
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death—
This is the pow’r of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home—
Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

"The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him."
-G. K. Chesterton

My mortal brain and heart cannot imagine sending your only begotten Son, to save someone like me.
Years before my son died, I told many folks that I loved them…but can’t imagine sending my only son to die so they would have a “chance” for redemption….knowing many wouldn’t accept it.
That shows how much God loves us…sent His ONLY begotten Son. Now every morning in that 30 seconds between half awake and asleep, I remember my boy isn’t here, but he is in heaven…because God loves us more than we can comprehend.

We don't know how really sinful we are.
We don't know how really Holy He is.

That's a good one but it's Rock of Ages for me....

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.

But the heathens have tried to change the lyrics to this one as well and for the same reasons. The line about saving us from wrath and making us pure has been removed in some versions. I guess some people aren't fans of the doctrine of double imputation.

Great song writers…The Getty’s are! They write music with solid theology.

Sow righteousness for yourselves and reap faithful love;
break up your unplowed ground. It is time to seek the Lord until He comes and sends righteousness on you like the rain. - Hosea 10:12
