Best thing to do is hang a 4x8 some thing covered in paper and pattern your gun at 40 and move in.

I know nothing about a 20 , never even shot one . But with a 12 and 10 ga. I got good blood using 000 and 00.

I aimed for heart lung

The saving grace many times was that you were hunting with dogs and either the dogs bayed the wounded/dead deer or we would put a trail dog on it on a leash and go find wounded/dead deer. Unfortunately we still lost a few as well. That being said, I would only use buckshot on a very specialized situation, like dog hunting. A rifle is almost always the best choice.
. This right here, I used 2 3/4 as well because that is what my gun shot, others used 3", but most all of us used #1 buck, because it had more shot in it. The dogs really did help out on wounded deer.

What's Jan 15?
Alabama deer season runs through Feb 10.

Yep use to you couldn’t shoot buck shot after dog season went out.

I am pretty sure this was changed a few years ago to allow buckshot to be used the entire gun season.

I have killed a dump truckload of deer with buckshot. 20ga buck, 12 ga #1, #4, 0, 00, 000. My advise from years of using it is NEVER USE BUCKSHOT UNLESS FORCED TO BY THE PLACE YOU ARE HUNTING OR A LAW/REGULATION.

USE ANY KIND OR CALIBRE OF RIFLE OVER BUCKSHOT.

i'm not gonna say something should be outlawed because i bow hunt and that would be highly hypocritical.
however, if you're gonna use a gun there are so many better new alternatives to buckshot for deer. it was terrible on hogs (could care less on them) and i saw it wound lotta deer that weren't recovered.

We only used buckshot as a last resort or for ground standers and drivers..everthing else was a high powered rifle..my daddy hated buckshot an lord knows how many he kilt with the stuff..i have shot exactly one deer with a 3.5in 00buck load..at 25 yards trottin away..heck i thought it was ded..i shot it an it did a flip an run about 200yds by my cousin an he shot it twice an killed it..i poked holes all in that deer..it would have died but no time soon.

I’ve had a few get away when I made a bad shot. But all the ones I killed dropped right there, no tracking needed, and it’s been a bunch of them. Just gotta shoot tight choke and keep it within its limited range. Bad shots and shooting to far have earned it a bad reputation.

Buckshot is a last resort. Shoot them with a rifle or slug if possible. I too have killed a pile of deer with buckshot while dog hunting but there are significantly better options for a quick humane kill. I cannot tell you how many times we'd skin bucks and the pellets falling out of the hide sounded like rain on the floor. You'd typically find that a few had gotten into the chest cavity but the majority were just under the hide and did nothing more than just bruise up the rib cage. Limiting the range is the key with buckshot. I think it loses velocity really fast which is why there is such a penetration loss once you get past about 30-40 yds.

The problem with buckshot is a lot of folks don't pattern their guns and then don't stay within the effective range of their gun. I've spent a lot of time and money figuring out what my gun likes, but most folks don't. I've shot a bunch of deer with a bunch of guns and buckshot has caused some of the most dramatic kills that I have seen. I've rolled them like rabbits and seen them hit the ground so hard they bounce. If a deer does run a little ways without bleeding, it's not a big deal if there is already a pack of hounds on him.

All that being said, when I still hunt, I use a rifle. Even if I only have close shots. I like blood trails and good scopes.

May the sound of hounds never die!

45 plus years ago on Dog Drives.....I've had to milk that 'Ole A5 Empty more than once before that Buck would stay down and Die. But those were the Occasional BIG Deer in the 220 to 245 pound range.....FAT as could be from Gourging on Soybean waste grain.
