Can any of y’all tell me about Lake Martin. My nephew headed down in few weeks for a fishing tourney. I never been there just trying to help him out. I figure a shaky head and or a ned rig would be good don’t know. He never been either

Another Smith Lake. Slow roll a small jig.

We fished a tournament there Saturday, caught a ton of fish, but not much weight. Things may be different depending on how long a "few weeks" is, but if I was going soon I'd be doing the "red crankbait" thing like Ben said. DT6, Shad Rap, really just about anything in the 6-10 ft depth and red/orange. Caught some on jigs/plastics too, but there was no size difference. Caught some on deeper brush with blade baits. But just 8-9 pounds of spots. We spent the last weekend down there "practicing", then our tourney down there this past Saturday, caught TWO largemouths the whole time. Granted, we didn't go upriver or fish a whole lot of typical largemouth stuff, but when we did we just didn't get bit. Just made a business decision to "get bit" and hope for a bigger bite....

Been a few years since I fished it & its like ikillbux said, its full of little spots & the lm are hard to come by. There's a creek just north of the state park i caught a couple of lm in.

What did it take to win? 12.40 was 1st and 12.39 was 2nd. Had 31 boats and I'd say 20 boats had 6-1/2 to 8 pounds. There was a big tournament (I'm guessing well over 60-70 boats), I think 15.77 won it.

I know any number of boats could tell a similar story, but we had a dirty day that cost us. First stop that morning (actually maybe my 2nd cast) I had a spot that looked 2+ (I'm saying probably upper 2's, closer to 3) just pull off at the boat. Partner had the net in position, fish wasn't pulling hard or anything weird, just got a few feet from the net and pulled off (demon shad rap on a spinning rod). Then around 1:00 we were on a bluffy-type bank with stumps and I was throwing a Frittside 7, never felt the fish hit, it just locked up and started head shaking.... I knew it was big. Fish came to the top and wollered, it was a legitimate 4-5 pound largemouth, zero doubt, we both saw it clearly. She pulled sideways just under the surface for about 10 feet and AGAIN, just pulled loose. Drag was appropriate, really didn't do anything wrong, she just wasn't hooked well I reckon. Those two fish woulda likely put us in first AND big fish. Either one of them possibly gets us in the money (the big LM def would've).

I practiced at Wedowee today, real similar to Martin. I've got a little tourney to fish Friday but about all I did was eliminate water. The water was 48 & dingy. Maybe it will settle out the next couple of days.

My experience over there is the fish I catch on a jerkbait and scrounger are a little better quality than what I catch on anything else
We will burn that bridge when we get there
