Any one got a lead on some pure bred girls? Ive been running commercial red angus for a few years now, but want to start putting some gert into the herd as well. And do some sale off the farm instead of pot loads on a small scale. I have a few gert crosses now and I’ve really liked them as momma cows and they do well crossed on red angus. I’ll keep my commercial herd but would like some pure bred to tinker with.

Cam when I was a teenager there was a cattle farmer that had gerts. It’s a beautiful bread but is it as docile and easy to work like red angus? If they are then that would make it a great herd.

My family in MS has a small operation. They just picked up a few head for breeding outside of Oneonta. I'll get the name for you.

Here

They are gentle. When I was growing up, we had a huge SG bull named Buford.
He was raised on a bottle as a calf and was like a giant puppy.
We would climb up on him and ride him around in the pasture like a horse.

For bulls call Brian Wood at 205-410-7934
For female breeding stock call Ricky at 205-533-5049
They have Facebook business page too

Reminds me of growing up with our Black Angus bull named Teepee, from Pocahontas, MS. Rode on his back out in the pasture all the time

Cam, the biggest drawback to those purebred big girls is that they are prone to prolapse during birth. I have washed and stuffed to many uteruses back in, to ever want to deal with anymore SG girls. If they are crossbred the prolapse issue doesn’t seem to be as much of an issue. Tip: if you have one to prolapse, I would suggest that you plan on putting her on the road prior to her trying to have another calf. It is not guaranteed that she will prolapse again, but a lot of times they do. Hope this helps.

To me they are. I have some heavy influence off a bull I leased 2 years ago. I like the frame size of them as well. I’m gonna cross them with red angus and build some replacements out of them.

The only reason I got out heavy influence Beefmaster. I still have some half BM half angus and they do great.

For those who don't know what prolapse is , don't ask here, research on your own .

I’ve sewed up over 100 in my life I’d imagine. I like to take some of that elmers glue and put some on the knot and her lips above it. Pick up some dry dirt and throw on it. It’ll stick to that glue and blend right in. Stockyard she goes.

When you purchase SG cows go ahead and pic up a box of shoulder length gloves and a big needle. 😊

Growing up Daddy had a SG bull he was plenty gentle for a bull but wouldn't make babies. Dad had him fertility tested and he checked out fine. Big fella was just ghey I guess. I assume when he would "fight" my Uncles bull and tear down the fence that to him it was just foreplay.

Do you put black shoe polish on your black cows then run them through the sale?
