What caliber is the AR? That's cool. I guess I never thought of hunting with a kayak. I know you can't technically hunt from the boat, but pretty cool pics. Thanks for sharing.
What caliber is the AR? Welcome - with a kayak its easier to strap it on outside than keep it in the boat. Always seem to be kicking it or getting it muddy. Its 5.56 - an Armalite/Eagle Arms lower and random parts upper. i have 75g HPs for ammo, Buddy owed me a favor so told me if I'd get him a lower he'd build me one from his parts bin. Its been a good rifle. Has put down several deer and coyotes. I have front and rear racks for the kayak when I want to use it for camping and when I used to deer hunt. I've said it often - I have three canoes and three kayaks. Anytime someone wants to make a trip I'm always ready. can do anything from a hour or so to camping.

That’s my kinda hunt! Have floated the lower Sipsey many times and it reminds me of that.Did you encounter any other folks on your float? If not, that’s a special deal nowadays, a tranquility hard to find .

There is deadfall, stumps, and logs all over the creek.

How do kayaks compare to a canoe as far as stability? Depends - there are three classes/types of kayaks. River, white water, and ocean. White water are like tadpoles. Short, no keel, flat, and very maneuverable. But they are very difficult to paddle on still water because they spin and turn with each push of a paddle. Are also much smaller. Ocean kayaks are long, narrow, have high sides, keels, and difficult to maneuver. Do not turn well at all. But they can really cover some distance. River kayaks are pretty much in the middle. They are longer than a white water but shorter than ocean. They are faster than white water and turn better than ocean. They have a keel but not as much as a ocean type. Being narrow a ocean type can flip quickly but you can almost roll a white water over and still right it. There are sit on top kayaks in the three types. For this area I like the river kayaks. My three are enclosed, 10', 12', and 14'. The 10 and 12 are river type, the 14' ocean. The 14' is narrow, no storage space, very unstable compared to the other two, and will have you in the water quickly if you aren't careful. There is no relaxing in it. The other two are very comfortable, sit well, and unless you do something stupid not easy to roll over. A canoe has more tip over potential because you sit higher and as you lean the bottom goes out from under you easier . There is much more tilt possible than with a kayak. The more weight you put in a canoe the more stable it it. Ballast makes a difference. In a kayak you are low and in the center. With a canoe you sit high and at one end. That just makes it more unstable. When using a canoe I try to have as much weight centered forward in the bottom as I weigh. Canoes can also be short with no keel, mid size, and long and narrow. To me a canoe is a pick up truck - a kayak a motorcycle. If camping I like a canoe - load that thing up. bring everything, Its going to be slow anyway. For just playing around I prefer a kayak. And a river type at that. Apologize for the rambling on.
