I know the standard is like a 3-9x40 for most situations. However, for those of you who shoot 90% of your deer under 100 yards, do you think a scope in the way of a 2-7x33 would give a wider field of view? What is everyone's opinions on the power of scopes that you use? I have always been curious about this and whether or not I need as much power as I have in my scope. Thanks

With me it's not so much about magnification as it is about brightness

Probably doesnt matter. 4 power fixed scopes, 3x9, or 2x7 only work if you can find moving targets in your scope.

I have redfield widefield 2x7s on my muzzleloader and one of my rifles. The other has a weaver widefield 4x. Doesnt seem to make a difference up close. The variable scopes are handy when looking over 100 yards though.

I have a 3x12 on my main rifle and have shot the majority of my deer with it on 4.5x. I like having the higher magnification for different situations incase it is necessary.

My go to Alabama gun has a 1.7-10x42 on it but I also hunt with a variety of guns that have various power range scopes kn them. The highest power scope I hunt with in Alabama is a 5-25x52.

I'm really liking my 2-10x42 Leupold VX5hd. I believe my next one will be a 1-6x24 Trijicon Accupoint for purely a mountain rifle. Most of my hunting is in the mountains with less than 150 yards of view. The 2-10 will easily cover deep woods and most field type situations.

My primary morning gun is a 450 Bushmaster AR. It has a 1-5x24 Minox scope with a 30MM main tube. The usual gun I shoot in the evening is a 308 Carbine with a 2-8x42 Zeiss with a 30mm main tube. If I really think I am going to sit late or on a bigger area, then I take my 308 Tactical with a 3-15x50 Minox with a 30mm tube. I like the extra magnification if I am looking to shoot a doe, because I can zoom right up on ones head and see it which I think helps me keep from shooting a small horn spike.

I have a couple guns with 3-9X40 scopes on them, usually a Nikon Monarch or Leupold. I have one with a 3-9X50 VX freedom on it. My 30-30 has a 2-7x33 Leupold on it. I have a 270 with a Nikon Monarch 4-16X50 scope on it, and I do not like it in close quarters. Maybe its my 3 low mag scopes and I am used to them, but I don't like starting at 4X. But that's me. I think its a very bright scope in low light, and the BDC reticle is like having a heavy one.

I like the 2-7 on my 30-30, but.... It just isn't as bright as the other scopes in low light. Nor is the scope on the 450.

Same here. The 1.7x10x42 Swarovski is a great all around Alabama hunting scope.

I shoot with both eyes open and that low magnification is really nice on the woods. The field of view is so large I can see the front half of my rifle barrel at 1.7X.

Also have a few others with low and magnification at 2X like the Leupold VX6 2x12x42 which is another great scope.

For woods and small plots I use a 1.5-6x42 SB

For big plots and cutovers a 3-12x42

For GIANT cutovers a 5-20x50 or 5-25-50

I tend toward higher magnification up to 16x. I always start with the lowest power and adjust if necessary or if light is available. I grew up with scoped 22's shooting turtles heads in an old slough. Vast smooth water and whack-a-mole turtle heads trained me well on getting on target fast.

I think most people's eyes and scope preference change over time.
I know mine has.

At this point my ideal deer hunting scope size would be a 3x12 or14 x 44.

I have always liked to really power up my scope so I have a closer view of the target.
My dad was the opposite.

I put a leupold 3.5-10x50 on pretty much everything I own. Actually just mounted a new one on a 35 Whelen which is my new go to rifle last Saturday.

I hunt with a Steiner P4xi 1-4x power and it gets the job done. I also have a 3.5-10x42mm on a .308 MSR that's working out pretty good with Sigs BDX system.

I put a 3x10x50 Nikon on my 308 7 years ago. I’ve regretted it for 7 years.

I don’t know why but I just don’t like looking through that big scope compared to a x40 or x32 on 3 or 4 power.

I won’t ever put another 50 on a gun I plan to hunt with.
