That buck really doesn’t share characteristics with what most breeders are trying to promote. I bet he’s a native. Just a full grown one. Same thing I was thinking

why is every really big buck an escapee from a high fence???? Cause ppl in AL have never let bucks live long enough to see what this state can produce lol. It’s kinda comical. That buck really doesn’t share characteristics with what most breeders are trying to promote. I bet he’s a native. Just a full grown one. You know I approve this statement. I have killed some real good bucks in Alabama. I think people would be amazed at what this state can produce if they let them get over 4 years old.

Probably just an old smart deer that had the club hunters figured out. I'd be curious to know if this deer was killed from an established stand or if someone struck out somewhere new and unhunted and killed him.

I never really got the 5 year old thing . Should 6 or 7

They might have opened the gate and pushed him out. Ugly deer. I would have crapped my britches if i saw him, hes a giant, but a ugly deer. Not what i would want to pay $10000 to kill. Great wild deer though. It would be pretty easy to figure out. Is it a 2yo or a 6yo. Thatll tell the story.

Mbrock, you are very observant, per your statement in the second part of your post. No way to truly know by way of the layman, but notice the head of the deer itself along with the overall heart-shape of what an Alabama deer typically will display. PLUS, exactly what Mbrock has stated there. The bucks within improved genetic herds of today within high-fences almost never look like this buck. Fairly obvious to the true student of the unique, (for the greater part of the state), Alabama whitetail, the different look you would have from most pen raised deer, head and antlers especially included. However, if the high-fence area had only Alabama deer and no improved genetics or introduced animals, then that's a different story. In other words, that buck could be an escapee from a native Alabama high-fenced herd and just a protected animal, until his escape. Great deer and my belief would be that he is of Alabama native blood. Congratulations to the lucky hunter.

Big Hairy Hunter, telling whether that deer is wild or highfence is real simple. If its a highfence deer, its two years old, or else it would have more rack. If its a wild deer, no way it got that much rack before its 5th birthday. Age is the only thing that puts that much antler on their head in the wild in Alabama. That does make sense.

Big deer, killed in the wild, I wouldn’t care where he came from.
