Its a shame when folks can't work a hard living without being bashed about the route they took in life. Sometimes you choose...sometimes life chooses you.

I agree with you %100 on that statement. But as some have stated unions charge employees to be members they do that to pay representatives and lawyers, also to compensate the workers if a strike is necessary. They don’t just agree to compensate people on a picket line for no reason.

One last thing from me then I’m out (I think). Three different people referred to myself and others as narrow minded. It’s not narrow minded to take in all aspects of an issue. You guys are all so PRO UNION that you “can’t see the forest for the trees”. Unions do sone things good and sone things bad and sometimes had rather a business fold than actually prosper. In this case the union could be 100% right (I’m not sure). But I can assure that’s not always the case.

Don't mistake my support for the Brookwood coal miners as being, "so PRO UNION that you can't see the forest for the trees." I've done my share of addressing problems with union reps and leaders, but I won't air that dirty laundry here with folks who have no business hearing the details. I addressed it with the guilty parties to their faces.

My support is for the Brookwood miners themselves who are fighting for the benefits they deserve in return for their labor. They don't make cars or steel or do any of the other stuff mentioned here to accuse them of wrongdoing besides mining the coal they were hired to mine. All that other stuff is not their fault.

I’ve learned a lot of things in this thread. I’ve learned that since I’m a union employee I’m a lazy worthless pos who is just strong arming my employer into paying me more money. I’ve learned that we should just be happy with what we’re given by the company and move along. The reason GM went into bankruptcy and got bailed out wasn’t the union mans fault. It was mismanagement by the higher ups. Taking way more than they should. Warrior met is very profitable right now and they should be willing to pay their miners more but greed won’t let em do that. I’ve been union for 30 years and I’m thankful for the union and the company I work for. They company I work for wouldn’t be where they are today without the union employees who have done all the work to make it the best company in their space. And after reading the expert anti union folks opinions on here I don’t even know how we could possibly achieve this. But we defy all the odds I guess.

I was always told life ain’t fair when I was a kid.

What’s stopping the union from striking into perpetuity and warrior met just hiring new people?

I really doubt the union guys know exactly what the profit margins, labor burdens and other overhead costs warrior met executives have to consider every year. All they see is “ceo makes millions, and I don’t”

Uhhh let’s see the cost of hiring and training new employees and that will only apply if they could find anyone willing to work.

Wait till they start advertising $25/hr in the newspaper. They’ll find people.

We were eating supper that night and I asked my Dad if the Union rep was still getting the pittance that he was getting paid each week. My Dad who was pro union all of my life sat there for a minute. He finally responded that he had never thought about it like that. That man who was speaking was in his suit with a fancy watch driving a big car and still getting a big paycheck from the union while they told the workers to hold out. He really did not have the workers best interest at hand.

My Dad used to be against Big Business and the Rich investor too. He is 83 now and looking back he sees just what I was talking about. The multiple Union strikes that we endured were never about working conditions or worker safety. They were all about strong arming the company. He was at that Steel mill for over 20 years and in the end the Union got the shop closed because of their mandates. The company finally said it wasn't worth it and closed the mill.

Great post.

At one time unions served to promote safe working conditions, trying and better wages.

That was a looooong time ago. Only people who really benefit are the union organizers and bosses.

$25 hour isn’t jack in the mines. And no people aren’t going to line up for $25 a hour to go down in a hole a mile deep in the ground all the while hoping it’s not filled with some type of gas.

The company I work for has always been union. It was acquired by a very large energy infrastructure company years ago and the union remains. I’ve been with this company for 8 years and I can honestly say we probably don’t need the union and nobody really even thinks or talks about it until it’s time to negotiate a new contract. We have the same health benefits, 401k, and PTO that all the other thousands of employees have that are non union. We have a relatively small work force and are very profitable. I guess what I’m saying is the union in my case seems to work fine for both sides but it’s probably not needed.

That was the same experience I had I can count on one hand the number of grievances filed in the 16 years I was there.

And any that do won't turn out good production, will break equipment and the accident frequency rate will shoot up. There's something to be said for experience in jobs like that whether that experience is union or non-union. Sure everyone is replaceable , but what's the real cost? It's easy for these fellers to have all the answers when they've never been on a heavy industry production floor , mine and such.

What kind of workers are those Brookwood coal miners?

Hear it straight from the horse's mouth. Doesn't sound like sorry car makers or steelworkers or slackers or whiners or bitchers. Just hard working coal miners trying to get a new bargaining agreement.

Your lack of support for them tells me more about you than your insinuations say about them.

That's Warrior Met's own description of the people you are making fun of. You should be ashamed of yourself, but I don't think you're man enough to admit when you're wrong.
