Peanut Harvest - Allergy: Question

Sat my dad and I drove up to GA to put up stands, and put out more corn. It had been dry for a couple of weeks and the peanuts were being harvested from many farms along our drive. It was very, very dusty. Most of the dust is dirt, but there had to be some peanut residue mixed in.

Do kids with peanut allergies have problems when the peanuts are harvested?

Do those kids have allergies to the plants, shells, or just the actual peanut inside the shell?

Just curious.

I dont know if the plants bother them but both the nut and shells do.

The protein is in the actual nut, not the shell/hull, and the protein actually causes the allergic reaction. Severely allergic individuals can have a reaction to the shell or hull as it was in contact with the nut and may leave residue.

BeerBelly, that's a good question. There are some kids that are so allergic the airborne particles set them off. I realize what some are saying about the part of the peanut that set off the allergies, but as the machines are harvesting, I'm sure some of that has to go into the air.

I am not a farmer and am far less familiar with farming than ~99% of the folks on aldeer. Except for oranges. There were lots of harvesters picking on our drive home, with massive plumes of dust behind them. A coworker, her son reacts so violently, that she avoids touching any foods with nuts in it at all times. I was just curious.

Live and work around peanut farming and the dust from it gets my allergies going, not as bad as ragweed or golden rod. Not as bad this year with all the rain.

My son carries an epipen for quite a few things he's allergic to. One of his biggest is peanuts, Every other year peanuts are planted beside, and in front of our house. He's never had a problem with the dust, granted I'm not going to let him go running around in it but the little that blows over our way hasn't bothered him. It is the protein in peanuts he's allergic to, for that reason he can eat food fried in peanut oil because it's a byproduct and has not proteins in it.

I expected someone on here to have that sort of first hand knowledge/experience. Good to hear.
