Ive got two dogs, they are pets, and one is a hell of a bird dog. They sleep where ever in the house, and we have a dog door where they can go in and out. They stay outside probably 50% of the time.

We’ve had house dogs for years. A Basset, big chocolate Lab (RIP Buck) and now a 2 yr old Lab Mix. The first two had a bed they laid on and slept on. Didn’t go anywhere else in the house. Current one has a kennel he sleeps in. He’s allowed on one couch in one spot and we put a blanket on it for him to lay on. Run a Roomba every couple days cause he sheds like no other dog I’ve ever seen. Will NOT mess in the house. He and I walk a mile and a half mile very morning and evening and some weekend mornings we do a 3.5 mile walk. Good for both of us.
He would be a crappy outside dog. Highly territorial and would bark at the neighbors too much. He’s not a great inside dog but it is what it is. I keep him as clean and smelling good as I can. He loves new people and visitors but gets more excited than I wish he would. I put my dog/dogs in the hallway with a baby gate up, when folks come over. After 10 minutes I'll let them out. It gives the dogs and visitors a moment to calm down. When the dog is calmer, it makes the interaction/introduction better, and allows you to have more control over the situation. There's some guests that think getting the dog as wound up as possible, is entertaining. Reducing the stress on the dog and keeping a routine will help a lot in due time.

It is simple in my house. The german shepard follows my son wherever he is. If he is inside, the dog is inside. If he is outside the dog is outside.

Humans have had canine and feline companions in homes for thousands of years.
Europeans had their prized hounds and other dogs inside centuries ago when they were trying to rule the world.
Egyptians and others in the Mideast and Africa had felines running around their sand castles.
It's nothing new.
What's new is all the furbaby coo-cooing stupidity that everyone should be able to take their widdle fur-child with them in restaurants or stores or anywhere at all whenever they want. Along with all the billions spent annually in pet toys-food-stuff.
Our dog and cat are inside pets. The dog also drinks slimy water out of a turned-over flower pot in the back yard and eats the head of a chipmunk or rabbit if he catches it.
They're not children or babies. We can love 'em, but keep it real without humanizing them.

My wife, a germaphobe, was against inside dogs when we first married. Our girls both had pretty bad allergies when they were small, requiring medicine and breathing treatments. Their pediatrician recommended getting an inside pet (my oldest was 2yrs & youngest was 6mo at the time), so we adopted Mr. Biscuit, a schnauzer/yorkie mix.
Not only do the girls no longer take any allergy meds, but you'd be hard pressed to find a crumb on the floor after dinner, regardless of how messy the humans are.
Oh, and he hangs out in my wife's lap anytime she sits down.

When did it become normal for dogs to spend the majority of their time inside? When I was young our dogs never came in the house. mine never come inside

We always had outside dogs growing up but most of them were large dogs. Nowdays for me it boils down to its size and its behavior. Id much rather have a well mannered trained small dog in the house than a cat. Any dog that drools is out for sure. I know one family who had one of the nicest $500k + homes you had ever seen. They also had 7 great danes that lived inside with them. The dogs had their own bedroom and were allowed only in the back den and the hallway from it to their bedroom. They were kennelled at night and let themselves in and out during the day thru a doggy door off the den into a fenced back yard.

After losing the inside dog battle, I pity the fool that decides he needs to come in my house unannounced...especially if dark. I believe those 2 labs will paint the walls with blood. I still get a kick thinking back to my wife's uncle coming in the house one day unannounced. He turned the corner and Cash saw him and it was on. Put him in the corner quick like. Dude was all drawed up kinda kicking at him to keep him away. He now calls when he's driving down the driveway to announce.
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Same question about when does everyone feel entitled to bring their dog into a private store? Target, Lowe’s, grocery store People aren't doing it because they're entitled, the stores allow it... Personally mine don't go in stores, he'd piss everywhere

People do feel entitled AND the stores allow and encourage that crap, instead of saying "NO." The reason they don't say no is because Corporate doesn't want the social media blowback and ensuing bullcrap.
If someone can't go buy a screwdriver or groceries or anything else without Widdle Snookuums Wookums riding in the cart or being by your side -- AND it's not a true, bonafide service animal -- they have issues.

Rule in our house, no dogs inside ever. Apparently I’m the nut job for having that rule. Nothing good can come from it. It’s fairly common I have noticed too. Amen

Heck id rather them bring the dogs than some of their kids or family. If the dog is well behaved and not leaving a mess or barking its head off who cares. Restaurants being the exception.
