I got a filling about a 18 months ago. Apparently the dentist didn't do it right because I now have to get that same tooth pulled because there is so much decay underneath the filling...

I have had several cavities and fillings throughout my life but none that ended like this. The funny thing is, I remember that day pretty well when he filled it. He said that because the x-ray of the cavity didn't look all that bad, he probably wouldn't even have to "shoot me up." He proceeds to drill it without numbing it. It hurts like a SOB for 10 or so minutes and I let him know it does but he keeps telling me he's almost done. Finally he's finished. No big deal. Life goes on.

Fast forward to last week. I wake up and that tooth is hurting like a beyotch. He retired last year so I went to a different dentist that was able to work me in on Friday morning. They say it's got to be pulled due to so much decay. From the outside the tooth looks perfectly fine.

New dentist (actually the old dentist's nephew) mentioned that my old dentist used the old school type x-ray films that take several minutes to form an image.

So basically, I let the dentist half ass drill into my tooth without any type of numbing agent and now I'll have one less tooth and about $1000 less cash in my pocket. The endodonist says the infection will require them to use anathesia on me instead of a shot when they extract it. So I'm sure that's half the bill.

A lot of cash for one tooth. I've had better luck using Oral Surgeons for tooth extractions.

If you're not using Dr. Manasco in Daphne as your endodontist, you should be.

He is as good as they come. Might be worth it to see him for a 2nd opinion.

Wait

are you having the tooth pulled? or a root canal. Because a $1000 extraction is insanity

From the sounds of it I'd get a 2nd opinion as well.

I agree with that and Endodontist do not routinely extract teeth. Endodontists do root canals.

Fortunately my wife's sister's husband is a surgeon in Mobile and was able to get me an appointment on Friday for the extraction from an endo he knows. Everyone we called before was booked way out til later in the month in Baldwin and mobile county. One was able to see me next week and was going to charge $900 which included the anesthesia that they said I was going to HAVE to have due it being infected. Also, that is the cash price since I don't have dental insurance.

It might have been an oral surgeon. I might have said endodonist by mistake.

I pull about 500 teeth a year and I've never heard the "you need anesthesia/sedation because of the infection" line.

Dang, i had to have 8 removed from a wreck (several years ago) and i was around 1,300 (cash) and that was with the giggly juice and an IV, of course they still couldn't get me to sleep lol, But i didn't feel a thing. My Mother and Wife as used them also, and price was always reasonable, but guess they've went up a GOOD bit

I also would recommend an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to remove your tooth, if there are any issues they can manage easily and if sedation is recommended they can do that as well. But I may be slightly prejudiced as a recently retired surgeon.

Two shots of bourbon, pliers and a wash rag (bare metal pliers on a tooth, not good).

I snatched one out last year. It was killing me and everyone I called was talking about 5-6 days getting in, COVID I guess. it hurt like hell breaking it loose, I had to stop and catch my breath a couple times but I’d do it again before I kept a toothache a week.

I hav had a couple pulled due to too much tobacco- got shot - did not feel it

Finally quit the tobacco after 36-37 years of doing it

I agree that $1000 to extract a tooth sounds pretty high, but I could not resist posting this 😂
