I’m thinking about getting a new to me F-150 2017-2020 model. Do I need to stay away from any certain engine that comes in these trucks.

I got a 2016 with a 3.5 ecoboost, AFE cold air intake, throttle body spacer and tune pushing about 425 hp. Got 90,000 on and put a water pump on it. Will have to put another water pump on it about 200,000. I replace turbo fittings, thermostat, and gaskets when I do it. It gets drove and with anything theres maintenance

I run a Hypertech 2.0 tuner, there are more aggressive tuners out there but Hypertech tunes are designed not to exceed maximum factory testing specs. I put the tune on after my 75,000 warranty expired. Truck comes out of 4th gear and cuts of at 125 with a 34.5 inch tire on a 20 inch wheel. I never run it on the high octane performance tune but may later

I drove all 3 engine sizes when i bought mine…2.7(?) 3.5 and the 5.0. The 3.5 twin turbo v6 dove the best. That 5.0 is bullet proof tho. Some days i wish id took it home. The 2.7 seemed really under powered in a full size pu…

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

I had a ecoboost it started to smoke around 100k. I traded for a new at the time 2015 5,0 I now have 185k miles on the 5.0 and have had zero problems. Still doing great.

I have the 2.7 and have used it to pull my 20'6" ranger from Dothan to Guntersville it got about 8-9 mpg doing that It sucks for gas milage even when not pulling My FIL has a 16 with 3.5 and a 19 with the 5.0 I have 50k on mine and he has 175k on the 3.5 and about 80k on the 5.0 Out of all three the 5.0 gets about 17-18mpg and is way better on fuel milage than either of the others If you are just going to ease around and just drive it the 2.7 will be great but if you are doing any work pulling you better get the 5.0

I don't pay attention to mileage when towing.

I went from V8 to 3.5L EB and it's night and day when pulling boat or 12' trailer.

About 1/3 my miles are pulling something, and thus far, the EB gets the vote.

If you are looking for the best mileage, better get a 3/4 ton.

They updated the 3.5 in 2017 to add in port fuel injection (still has direct injection too) as well as go to a two timing chain setup as opposed to the single. Supposed to cure the intake valve coking and timing chain rattles on startup, respectively. I haven’t done much research on it since I sold my rattling 2013 in 2017 for a 5.0. Great motor, just like the 5.0 better for peace of mind in the longevity department.

My wife has had an 11 f150 5.0 since 2013. After each service I buy 2 quarts of oil & will add both before the next service. It runs great but it has always used oil. It gets around 18mpg on the road, 15 local.

I just bought a 2019 with the 2.7. I tow my boat to either Ditto or Guntersville with no problem, I just don't look a the the fuel economy display while doing so. Took it to Texas earlier this month. Putting premium gas in it got me an extra 150 miles to a tank of gas. And when I needed some speed to pass someone on I-40, I easily reached over 90 mph. The Ford Pass app is really nice as well. I get phone alerts for maintenance, remaining oil life, etc.

I am sorry, but if I bought a new truck and I know they cost some $ now, and it burned 2 quarts of oil between oil changes, they would be buying it back from me.

I got a 2020 with the 2.7 and it hauls ass in sport mode and hauls my 4,000 lb. boat great. Anybody who says it is underpowered is full of shucks or has never actually drove one. Mine has the 10 speed tranny. Love this drivetrain. I get 19 mpg in normal mixed city/highway driving. Pulls a lot better than my pos 5.3 chevy with the 4L60 did.
