Few guys planning a kayak and canoe float trip on the Coosa in June. Anyone have any tips and tricks for the area? I’ve already heard Moccasin shoals can get tricky. I fish from a kayak a lot but never the Coosa.

Left of the big rock at Moccasin gap, to me, is easier to slide through. Less chance of rolling and potentially losing your stuff.

You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?

Moccasin gap is your only obstacle, but if you hug the east bank you can avoid the rapids all together depending on water level and flow rate. Very little fishing pressure through most of that stretch and it can be spot heaven. I used to fly fish there and wear out the spots and bream, but again water flow is key.

Thanks for the good advice guys! I think the current plan is to fish down to one of the islands, camp and catfish that night and fish our way to the landing the next morning.
