Some of you older guys, like me, may remember your grandparents name for a skunk as “poll cat”. Oddly enough, I think that name for skunks may have died out with my grandparents. Turns out, it’s a real thing, doesn’t exist in the United States, and was probably a word passed on from our English ancestors.

Was alway told the the spotted ones were pole cats . Stripped ones were skunks

They used Poll Cat in the old TV Westerns, I believe Gabby Hayes liked to use that phrase.

Back in the late 70s me and my cousin ran a green stick in a hollow log trying to get a squirrel out and that was my first interaction with a pole cat!! Needless to say neither one of us was gonna sneak up on anything the rest of that day.
