Irish - In that every year the Jefferson's Ocean is subject to a different climate/different voyage, there is some difference in every batch. That may explain why the 2nd bottle wasn't as good as you remembered the first being. It's also why the Small Batch 4 Roses may be better than a specific (single) barrel. It's a blend of barrels, aiming for a taste, rather than WYSIWYG. As far as the original question, Blanton's, Pappy, and 12YO Van Winkle were all memorable. We had a friend who grew up with the current Van Winkle maker/owner/ceo who introduced us to Rip. We thoroughly enjoyed it. To our minds at the time,it was higher proof than Wild Turkey, tasted almost as good, and was about half the price.
Used to be a lifeguard, until that blue kid got me fired.

Back in the 70's I was friends with some well drillers down in Fayette County and they had an art for making whiskey. They even aged whiskey in charred barrels that turned out dark colored and smoothe as silk. Their blend was the smoothest whiskey I have ever drank. Back then it ran 25 a gallon and we brought many gallons back to North Alabama every time we visited them. One of the brothers got caught making whiskey and almost was charged with a federal offense. That pretty much shut the production down. I sure wish I had a gallon of Billy and Melvins brew set back somewhere to remember the good times with. Best whiskey ever produced in Alabama was made inside Wolfe Creek WMA by these boys.
I can't stand a thief.

Irons 1 is a small batch single man operation out of Huntsville. Hard to find but fantastic.

I've got a shelf full of good stuff. But that's my go to.

That is a hard question like what's the best Rum, Tequila, Vodka, etc...
I think a lot of it has to do with:
1. The individual and their personal taste. 2. The time at which you drink it. 3. What you are eating, smoking, drinking just before you drink it, etc... 4. The particular batch of whiskey you are drinking. 5. What mood you are in.
John Emerald continues to be one of my favorites, but then again I like Scotch, so I like the smokiness of it.
I also favor Chattanooga Whiskey. I particularly like the 111 Cask.
I remember really liking Jefferson's Ocean (It rides around on freighters in the ocean for several years.) the first time I drank it, but then I splurged on a bottle and it wasn't as good as I had remembered, but still really good.
I also like Four Roses Small Batch. It's better to me than the Single Barrel. The regular Four Roses is my go to house whiskey along with Wild Turkey 101.
Scotch wise, I have some Dewar's "Caribbean Smooth" aged in Rum barrels and it is really good.
I don't typically buy really high end stuff, but I search for values in good tasting booze. I won't normally spend more than $50 a bottle, and if it's that high, it better be really good. If you like Chattanooga, and I do, the beer barrel cask is absolutely fantastic. My second favorite.

Four Roses is good for sure. I suggest y'all give Old Weller Antique a try as well as Rebel Yell 10 year old. Larceny is really good too. Just saying.....

I may be showing my white trash a little bit here but honestly I enjoy George Dickel # 12 Superior as much as anything else. Just love the stuff. Dickel bottled in bond is darn good also.

Some are too expensive for them to be a crap shoot on the taste.
