Simple. The later start date worked. More hens bred early!

Friend of mine east of Montgomery showed me trail cam video of a gobbler breeding a hen in February of this year, so it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case around here but I am surprised they already have poults that far north though. That dominant gobbler must be so potent that he just has to walk by the hens...

I’ve seen a few poults as early as mid April but not very often. Usually May to June.

I have a coworker that has 2 hens with 20 poults coming in his yard every other day nearly. Another co worker nearly ran over some new hatched poults this am. He said about 4” tall. The guy seeing the 20 says they’re big enough they fly um in the trees behind his house with the hens.

Dominant Gobbler got after 'em early.

I noticed last week that Oklahoma's DNR is "urging" hunters to not kill a limit this season and possibly delay hunting until after the first 7-10 days to "reduce the impact on breeding."

1. You cannot stockpile gobblers.

2. If we're going to shift the season so as to not impact breeding, move the damned opening day to April 20 and extend it through May 31. Problem solved and we'll be neck-deep in gobblers in just a couple of years.

It's gotta mean that the hens were bred in early February, then spent the last two weeks of February laying eggs, and spent most of March sitting on them. Our hens have disappeared; I think most of them are setting now. It hasn't been real unusual to see poults in late April, but I have never seen any this early. It's beneficial that they spread the hatching out over a long period so that a single bad weather event doesn't wipe out a whole hatch.

The idea that they should all hatch at the same time seems dumb to me, but our favorite biologist is trying to sell the idea that they are all supposed to hatch at the same time to overwhelm the predators. Looks like to me that he is just looking for any excuse in the world to further restrict hunting.

Tasty little morsels. And legal, as long as you can tell the little fellers apart grin

I know it’s politics, but this is the part I keep struggling with.
