Just lost another piece of land to hunt, because the landowner put the feeders and corn back out, that we’d already removed....just for turkey season. He insisted he needed to keep feeding the deer for youth hunters next year, and didn’t care about us turkey hunting. Just gave him back his permit. Pointless.
OTOH, could be some shady stuff we aren’t aware of, too....but, it’s his land.
Saddest part? I and my bud are the ONLY ones that have EVER taken youth hunters there, (in 15years) period.

Update:
I can confirm, that if you hunt in an area that you have no knowledge of bait existing, you will be found guilty. Period. I had the man who put it out testify that he put it out, and I had no knowledge of it, and the judge still found me guilty.
Judge said it is the hunters responsibility to know the area. Did you lawyer up or fly solo?

Solo. Doubt it would have mattered. Ouch. You’re probably right but I’ve never been brave enough to take that chance. Not even sure what the point of a trial is if the judge is just gonna rubber stamp a guilty verdict when there’s clear testimony to the contrary. That sucks.

I finally had time to look it up; here's a good summary of the Archie Phillips case: https://www.taxidermy.net/nta/news00_archie.htmlHe had to take it all the way to the AL Supreme Court to get them to rule that baiting could not be tried on a "strict liability" basis. Archie was set up by a neighbor who put bait on his land , then told the GW about it. It had to go all the way to the supreme Court before common sense won out. It was the job of the GW in your case to write the ticket. It's not his job to determine whether you knew or should have known; that's the job of the judge. If you really want to beat it, you probably need a lawyer. If the guy who put out the bait will cooperate, I think you will beat it. I have never intentionally hunted turkeys over bait, but I have unknowingly walked into baited areas while carrying a gun on several occasions, as I mentioned above. I don't think I ever deserved a ticket because I always got out of there as fast as I could when I realized it was baited. I don't think you deserve a ticket either. There ain't no way in the world that anyone who hunts in a club could check every spot in advance of hunting it. That is an impossible burden to put on hunters. If you want me to testify to that effect as an expert witness, contact me and I'll be glad to help. The irony here is that Archie Phillips baited his place heavy heavy. Heavy. Ask me how I know, lol.
