A friend said I could use his 870 youth model but he only has a modified choke tube. I'm going to purchase a carlson's tube but wondered the thoughts about the full .590, extra full .585, and turkey .575.

I'm probably shooting hevi shot blends/7 shot or #6 3" shells. I'm leaning toward the x-full because Ive seen some comments that if in the future he would shoot TSS that might give better results. Though he hasn't turkey hunted in years and I doubt he gets back into it.

Side note...I did try a search 1st but didn't see a helpful link.

Hard to beat the Remington Super Full (RSF 0.572”) with that gun/shell combo. And it can/could be bought for $30-something.

Off topic. Can the Remington Super Full safely be used with TSS?

In short, yes. No safety worries, however, may not hold up as long as some other chokes. I have one that after a few dozen rounds of TSS doesn’t pattern as well as it originally did.

Never had an issue with the RSF in my 870 shooting TSS and it patterns as well today as it did when I got it.

I have a Carlson's .575 you can have. PM your address if you want it and I will try to get in the mail in the next day or two.

Thanks. That is really generous.

My younger son doesn't have the reach and also isn't able to support my old 20 gauge (it is very heavy). Like many younger children I'm letting him hunt a couple years earlier than his older brother. I think borrowing this 870 youth will hopefully make his hunt more enjoyable.

Try a Savage/Stevens 301 in 410 if you can find one.
You can't possibly find less recoil and weight in a turkey shotgun.

I shoot a primos tightwad .572 in my 870. It was $5 at wing supply.com. You may want to check there.

I also experimented with various bipods/shooting sticks for my son when he first started hunting and finally settled on the
V-Pod by Hunters Specialties. It could be a little tricky if he had to try to adjust while the bird was coming in, but it was a lifesaver when he was sitting there waiting on the bird to show up.
