It goes back to the early days of each. Toyota had the straight axle front end , looked better and was bullet proof. Nissan( Datsun at the time) was behind and still is. Nissan's fuel mileage used to suck pretty bad also, even their 4 cylinders. I get virtually identical fuel economy from my V6 Frontier as I did with my V6 Tacoma.

Personally I wouldn’t have either one. I’m a full grown man that needs a full grown truck. But both are nice vehicles. "Just how big a ol' boy are ye?"

My sil has a frontier and it has been good for him, but he only uses it like a big car, he doesn’t need a truck. I see a lot of people driving F150s and Dodge Rams like this, and it makes me laugh. Puddle of water in a Publix parking lot makes them cringe and mud gives them hives.

Try to spare the transmission from any extra stress!

Personally I wouldn’t have either one. I’m a full grown man that needs a full grown truck. But both are nice vehicles. "Just how big a ol' boy are ye?" I hunt out of a 91 Toyota standard cab Pickup and have since about 1998 (the same one).I'm 6'3" and 325#. I fit in it fine, just not much extra room for junk. Me, one rider, 2 guns and it's full. I'm a dog hunter and can be rough on a truck in the woods. We have deep water and sloppy mud at times in central Fl. It gets me around unbelievably well. I also have to work on it regularly, but can't fault the truck for that for the way I treat it. There's not much that needs to be done to it that I can't do myself, and not much I haven't done. My wife drives a 2016 Tacoma with 80k on it. I expect it to last a good long time. We'll have it payed off shortly and I am looking forward to no car payments for a while. I can drive hers, but not comfortably. I much prefer my '05 GMC. As much as I love a Toyota, no way I'd buy a Tacoma for myself to drive everyday. Newer full size trucks are about the same price and close to the same fuel mileage, but with a lot more room.
May the sound of hounds never die!

I don't know about the Frontier but I have a Nissan Altama that I absolutely love. I've had it about 2 years with zero issues. Great gas mileage and very comfortable. I will own another when this ones wore out. No knocks on Nissan's from me.

My hunting vehicle is a 2002 Xterra - same V6 as the Frontier that year. Got it used and it now has 190k miles on it. So far, had to replace the radiator, water pump, and starter. Right now the anti-lock brake system is out and the valve cover gaskets leak.
The Xterra is comfortable and easy to park. With the rear seats down I can haul as much as can be stuffed into it. The 4x4 works great even on ice slick roads. My biggest gripe is the gas mileage. The best it can do is 16 mpg.
I'm thinking of replacing it with one of the new Ford Rangers in 4x4. If I wasn't adverse to investing in a depreciating asset, like having car payments for instance... I would go out a buy a new Ford Ranger FX4. But I've thought about it and I drive my 2013 Nissan Frontier and I think, "Would one of those new Rangers do $30k more stuff than my Zero Debt Nissan?" The answer is always "No." So I just keep on truckin' True, payments are a pain. But if you keep the truck 20 years it sort of levels the lifetime costs. I'm giving the '02 Xterra another couple of years and will probably get rid of it for an off the lot 4x4. That will be my retirement vehicle (along with an all electric sedan).

My 2012 Frontier is kicking along fine with 190k miles. I’ve used it as a daily driver since it was new, plus unfortunately used it as an atv at the hunting club till I recently bought a 4 wheeler. With locking rear diff and good tires, it will go anywhere I have any business being. No maintenance issues aside from a self induced clutch issue when I attempted to pull a big diesel out from the mud. (User error)
The design is dated and it has a few issues such as poor turning radius, rear seats not very comfortable for adults on a long trip, and interior electronics are behind the times. But it excels at “being a truck” if a midsize fits your needs. See... That just goes to show you how everyone is different. I actually think the seats in the Nissan are some of the most comfortable truck seats I have ever had.

I’ve found Tacoma seats are too low for my liking with my legs sticking straight out. My front seats feel like “normal” seats.

Just too small for me. I know really next to nothing about cars and trucks. My Titan is big enough and has been fine. It's an 04 and seems to be going strong. Knock on wood. I was actually looking for a Titan 4x4 when I found my Frontier and it was too nice a truck for the money to pass up.

I had an 02 frontier 4 door 4x4 that I sold 2-3 years ago with 220,000 miles on it. Great truck Funny coincidence, I just bought a 2010 frontier 4 door 4x4 yesterday for my soon to be 16 yr old. Seems to be a solid truck for WAY less than a Tacoma!

You always hear how great of a truck that the Taco is, and it is, but you never hear the same type of praise heaped on the Frontier, when it is at least as good of a truck and I would argue an even better truck.
