Ipwhites comment on killing a buck yesterday at 9:15 a.m. in gale force wind got me thinking (again!) about the wind. I tend to just not go when it’s bad and certainly when it’s whirling. What do you all say about the winds influence, and if it’s a negative, what’s the mph cutoff?

I've killed a couple of good ones on mornings when everyone else slept in because it was "too windy" and they weren't gonna move.

I'll take a good strong wind from a consistent direction any time over that calm, light and variable wind.

Hunt some in the midwest, and it's always windy out there, and they still move.

Yes I love for the wind to blow. I would rather have a 10-15mph wind than no wind at all

It is really the majority/minority rule or the 90% vs 10% rule.

GENERALLY, high winds like today - 15-25mph is a MAJOR deer movement suppressor - just like warm weather.

Then there is the exception to the rule.
Yes, there will be some deer that will eventually move in it - especially if they are hungry enough.

My lifetime experience is that high blustery winds makes the large majority of deer stay bedded down.

I killed a buck yesterday afternoon in the gale force wind. Wasn't anything to write home about but he was a decent public land buck and I needed some more meat. He was the 5th buck I saw. I was constantly watching the wind currents though as they were swirling really bad. I found a spot where the hills kept forming a little eddy and caused the NW wind to actually swirl to the north. Shot the buck at 75 yards from the ground.

I killed deer both Saturday and Sunday in very high winds. Saturday it was terrible.

In most cases in high winds I hunt thick. They move really good. Most people just don’t see it cause they’re hunting in the open.

I could have killed a 3 year old buck Saturday in the wind and a 2 year old buck yesterday in the wind - but wasn't interested in them.

Could have killed does on both days too. But wasn't interested in does.

It is hard to generalize such things. Anything is possible. Generally, high winds are bad.
But obviously it doesn't negate the possibility of deer movement. Obviously, going in deep close to thick areas would be the best way to hunt high winds.

I think it is supposed to be high winds remaining tomorrow afternoon and I plan to hunt.
Will see what happens!

I don’t mind wind. But I’ve just about quit hunting hot/warm days before the front

Much rather have a windy day than a calm day. Over 20 is not optimal but a 10+ mph wind is usually consistent. I refuse to go on light/variable wind days.

If you don’t trust hunting in the wind, don’t hunt. You have to be confident. I hunt, I don’t worry about weather unless it is a dangerous condition.

Where are all the big mature buck kills from yesterdays 15-30 mph winds?
.
It was plenty cold. Thought there would be dozens of 4-7 year old bucks killed and reported here with pics.
