Hardie board and batten or brick?
Our current home is brick and we’ve been really happy with it, but we plan on selling and building another house soon and we really like the look of board and batten, but we love the low maintenance of brick.
What are the pros and cons of each? How many years can you typically get out of good paint and caulk on Hardie and what’s the average going rate for a repaint per gallon or sq ft? I’m not quite sure how painters charge.

Brick

A good paint job with quality paint, you can get 15 years +.... depending on conditions, trees sun ect

Color me stupid (which I am sure a few have), but I don’t think I have ever seen board and bat hardie board.

Stay with brick

Depends on where the house is being built....I would lean towards brick the majority of the time but wouldn’t want a beach or lake home made of brick. Board n’ batten with some stone columns or skirting would be a much better look in those situations.

Just Curious, what is the price difference between brick and Hardie board?

have you thought about brick veneer. not to many homes are brick anymore if any. Real brick homes are two layers thick and the brick serves as the structure.

I did hardy but wanted brick happy wife happy life...i still wish it was brick

I bet he’s talking regular 2x stud walls, wood sheathing and then a single layer brick. Guess that would be considered a veneer finish.


I would go brick and/or LP smart siding. When we were looking at building a few months back that was going to be our go to. Now we’ve put the project on hold until the lumber market settles down a little bit.

100% brick.

I have Hardi and it was pre primed and needed repainting and caulking after 10 years.

look into Trulog siding, they make several different models of siding.

brick, less maintenance, it can be painted (you don't have to stay with the original color), I think it looks better.

I'd go brick. Mine isn't, I wish it was.

We built 40 + years ago and chose brick with Western cedar . Replaced the western cedar with hardy board about 5 years ago and added a sun room , all hardy board . Looks great and have been well pleased! Carpenter bees are not a problem anymore .

They make like Sierra board that's 4x8, then you run hardie 1x2 .....

heck with that. if your painting it, its wood. Wood rots, wood needs caulked. Ive been in my current house 25 yrs. My parents have been in theirs 35. Mine is completely wood exterior. Theirs is brick and vinyl trimmed. Theirs has been basically maintenance free other than pressure washing/cleaning. Mine has been painted 3 times. Had wood already rotting on it when I bought it when it was 5 yrs old. I wont have another wood exterior house.

Brick gets my vote or. if you are wanting a rustic look , look at old kentucky log. its concrete log veneer and you cant tell the difference between it and real logs from 5 foot away..

When it comes time to build my house. I will absolutely be building with efficiency and ease of ownership in mind.
