I've been a bunch. PM me with questions.
As a preview, I've figured out what I spend on fuel, field decoys, pulling enclosed trailer, running around scouting (fuel and time), spending time trying to contact landowners and farmers, that paying an outfitter ain't that bad of a deal. I love doing it freelance, it just doesn't make economic sense.

The most enjoyable part of the trip to me is the riding and scouting in the afternoons after the hunt.

Fair enough, if starting out new and trying to get into the field hunting game with the capital to go out and fund new equipment, that's right. 15-20 years ago, there was a lot more availability of non-posted land. The last decade and especially the last five years have seen this tighten down significantly. It used to be that you could find multiple feeds every afternoon on non-posted land and have very little competition to get on one of them. Now, if you do find a feed on non-posted land, you better have a truck there all night. Or, you can spend time getting phone numbers and trying to get permission. It's all fun. I love the scouting and trying to out smart them too. This fall, I hardly saw another waterfowl hunter, don't know if that was covid or something else.
