I have L5S1 trouble. The chiropractor was a complete waste of time. Maybe he was just a bad one but i don’t recommend going that route. Best thing for me was exercise/stretching and getting injections when needed. Oh and common sense helps too. This right here.

My best friend is a brain and spine guy. He once told me about the lower back fusions that what happens at the end of your first surgery is you just start the clock on when you'll need the second one.
Manage pain as long as you can. However, do it under the care of a good physician. Nerve damage is nothing to mess around with.
And listen to bustinbeards! I’m on #4.Exhaust all options before getting filleted...

Strength training, zero gravity options, etc.
Don't do surgery until nothing else fixes it.

If you are having leg symptoms don’t let someone adjust your back until you have some type of imaging done on your back. Those leg symptoms are sciatic nerve related. At this point seeing a chiropractor, You could end up worse off than you are. Read this post twice, three times if need be. Bustinbeards speaks from the tree of wisdom and experience Got it diagnosed with a CT scan and an MRI this morning, going to see Dr. Pat Ryan in Montgomery, he comes highly recommended. My son is an anesthesiologist is Little Rock and says he gets a lot of pain management work from referrals from back surgeons.

Bustinbeards speaks from the tree of wisdom and experience Very wise....I use to think the people with back pain were "soft." That was until the day my wife had to get me out of bed and literally carry me to the Dr. 6 weeks of "therapy" and eating pain pills like skittles, I finally had a MRI and was diagnosed with sciatica. Talked the dr to cut me in 2 days. Worst pain I've ever had. Lived with it for 10 years, I just thought I was tough. Just shoulda gotten cut on to begin with. 1 week of recovery with pretty severe pain then 6 weeks of light duty, which was tough as a fireman in a small department. But I'm better now. Cold rainy days it will act up but nothing a few advil can't stop.

Herniated disc are offal. If you truly have one, you will need surgery.

I had a herniated L5. Chiropractor kept me out of the operating room. I still get a flare up from time to time but one thing for sure, you don’t want to go the surgery route unless you just have to. Find you a good chiropractor and let him help you. I had a messed up L5 earlier this year (not herniated) but the chiropractor was a huge help. It's not for everyone, but it's worth investigating.
A mans got to know his limitations.

Got the same problem with a couple of bulging disks thrown in for added discomfort. Physical therapy with dry-needling and some routine floor stretches have been the biggest help I’ve found. Been fighting it for about 8-9 years after a roll-over ATV accident and have tried about everything there is. The injections worked for the first few years then the durations between them got shorter and shorter. Not sure about your situation, but carrying a little extra weight around doesn’t help much either! Floor stretches helped with mine!! It still acts up, but the stretching helps every time. I went to neurosurgeon in BHam not long after mine happened. He said the stretching helped!
