I think it's safe to say from that picture that the deer is as old as he's going to get and not any older. 3

Yep. I was just curious about what his age was. I figured he was 5+ looking at his body. I was confident he was mature. Toothwear only looked 4 to me, but I’m far from an expert in that department. The pic may be angled a bit too instead of straight above the tooth.

He definitely wasn’t 2 or 3 and I doubt 4. Maybe the photo angle is just bad. I’ll get a better pic when I get the jawbone.

What makes you say that. I honestly see 3. I enjoy the tooth wear aging. I know it isn’t 100% but I think you can get pretty close.

This is one of the best sites I have found to help with aging via jawbone

CORRECTION. I see where you get 4 now. I paid zero attention to back tooth

Lefthorn, there’s too much cupping in the last molar, the premolars have way more wear than any 3 year old. The first and second molars have typical wear for a 4 or perhaps even older.

Yep. I glanced at it first go at it. Last molar is definitely cupped. Width of dentine doesn’t look very wide which is why I said 3 but may just be picture

I never saw the second pic (side angle) which clearly shows substantial wear you’re citing on the last molar. The vertical pic (pic1) appears to show very little wear or cupping on the last molar, with the back of the molar being almost as high as the crest. Based on that alone I said 3. Seeing the second pic now, it almost looks like a diff jawbone with regard to the last molar. I’ve seen deer in sandy south Bama soils exhibit that kind of premolar wear and 1 and 2 wear at 3yrs.

Yes deer in the lower third of AL and MS in sandy soil do seem to age much quicker than deer farther north. I’ve seen that too.
