I thought that this was a cool picture that I came across. The size of elk & moose always amaze me.

If we get those here on WMA’s, packing one out like that could cause an ammo shortage.

Has any RMEF local chapters tried to do a relocation/stocking? Seems like Bankhead, Skyline, Freedom Hills.... some of those areas would be prime.

Will never happen with the CWD and the risk. I love hinting elk but honestly the risk isn’t worth it, although there is a captive heard not farm from Bankhead around Addison or there was a few years ago.

IIRC there was an attempt to reintroduce elk to north Alabama quite a long time ago. I'm sure someone will chime in with more information.

KY, TN,NC, and now WV have reintroduce them, just not sure AL has a large enough area of very low population density to do it.

Alabama already proved the local hillbillies couldn't handle having elk in alabama.

You can read about it here. I believe disease played a part as well. Been a while since I read the article.

Al has tried. See my post above. And you are correct in your thoughts.

Bama doesnt have the right hunter demographics to reintroduce elk. Heck, most bama hunters have a hard time passing up a young doe just barely out of spots and you think they would be able to let an elk walk by rofl

Well that’s why I was thinking about putting them in Bankhead. Most hunters don’t walk more than a half mile from their vehicle. That leaves plenty of room for the elk to survive.

I’d be covered in Orange from head to toe with flashing lights and a siren going off if I had to pack those horns out on my back. My luck I’d have the first time hunter with coke bottle glasses stalking me from the next ridge over.

With the way all the land is leased in Alabama, and elk tag would almost be useless without having thousands of animals. You know you’re not going to get permission to hunt the neighbors property LOL. Elk are also very destructive that’s why next week I’ll probably start trying to fill my damage tag and my freezer 😆

So from reading JBL’s article above and now knowing this tidbit of information I can conclude that the timber companies are lobbying to keep elk out of Alabama to protect their harvest..... no coincidence the last time it was tried was just as timber started to make its way into this state.

That is a really large elk, but I think that guys is kinda small as well, making the elk look larger.
