Anyone have recommendations/info/comments on cable gates for property roads? My road is currently open and I’ve had some tresspassing problems. I’d like something cheap and easy to put up. I’m thinking 1/4 steel cable, cable clamps, eye bolts, and some locks should do it. Also some painted pvc for visibility. Just looking for some input from y’all before I do it.

I'd go bigger than 1/4" and on a cable you gotta put a chain hold down in the center or the 4 wheeler crowd will just raise it up and keep going.

That'll work for the undetermined trespasser...a good gate won't be cheap

What size? Where is a good place to get steel cable? I was looking at HF and the largest I saw was 1/4. Just trying to keep it fairly cheap.

I would recommend tying 8-10 orange high viz ribbons on the cable just for good measure.

Just run the cable through a pvc pipe and spray paint that yellow. Ribbons will just end up on the ground and you dang sure dont want some kid to come barrelling up the road on his 4 wheeler and hit it and get injured or killed.

Chain hold down? Like a chain binder? How does this attach to the ground?

I need 35’ or so. Big equipment and trucks use these roads occasionally.

Cable. Hmmm. Accident waiting to happen. A very wise RIP member of ALDeer wouldn't let me use cable on land I leased from him. Don't do it. Put a gate up. Some atv trespasser is going to get decapitated. grin

Back when we ran dogs we carried a key with us. This key would cut any cable we encountered. How do you expect the big trucks that occasionally use the road to use the road? I bet they also carry a “key”.

About half of mine are gates and half are cable. I inherited all but one and there I replaced a gate with a gate. The cables are 3/4" going into 6" square tube posts. A slot is cut in the tubing. A flat plate is put in a loop at the end of the cable. The bar has a hole for a padlock. Put the bar through the slot and install the lock. I have a lock in the right post. The timber company has a lock in the left post. Not the cheapest way to go, but like I said, they were there when I got the lease. All gates and cables are painted orange, with No Trespassing signs on the posts. The cables are sleeved with PVC sections that are painted Safety Yellow.

With all that said, I've had folks pull gate posts out of the ground, shoot the locks off gates and tear gates down. For whatever reason, they've never pulled a cable down. The only two times I've had trespassers on cabled roads, they bulldozed around the cables.

Back in the day my great uncle and my grandfather would have rendered your truck inoperable after cutting one of their gates.

Take the cable down when they are coming.

No binder. dig a post hole , get apiece of 3/8 chain the length you want the cable above ground plus enough to go to the bottom of the hole. Quickrete the chain in the hole. Run the cable through the other end of the chain. Nobody can lift the cable and drive a 4 wheeler under it . I'd also use at least a 1/2" cable.

A cordless grinder with a cutoff wheel will walk through that cable like a hot knife through butter. If you can't do a proper gate, you're better off just doing nothing. Save yourself the money and headache.
