Well, it is the most time consuming, money eating, disappointing, cold, hot, frustrating, secretive thing that can quickly turn into an adrenaline rush, rewarding, satisfying, teaching, fellowshiping thing you can do.
Look at my screen name. Just happens to be my son’s name. That’s how eat up with it I was. I have since passed that obsession to him and I could not be any more proud.
Start slow, go with some with experience and leave the calls alone for a while.

The most important thing about killing ducks is having ducks to kill. Find the place where ducks want to be and set up. Don’t over hunt it. Get in kill a few birds and get out. That’s the biggest mistake I see today’s duck hunters make. They sit in the blinds till noon and shoot at every bird that passes within a couple hundred yards of the blind. One last bit of advice my grandpa told me was “never call a coming duck”. If the duck want to come to your spot leave the calls in your pocket. Good luck.
It's hard to kiss the lips at night that chews your a$$ all day long.

You gotta have a chit load of free time too. The trucks and boats have been lined up at the boat ramp in Arkansas since Sunday. Those idiots can't be on the water until Saturday morning and yet, there they sit.
I'm kinda jealous actually, I haven't had that kind of free time in decades.

Start by hunting wood ducks in Alabama. Different game from chasing the migration in AR, MS and other states but it'll give you an idea. Cost of entry is low and there are a ton of public land options in South AL. You can find some spots that don't require a 'duck' boat that you can walk in or canoe. . Only items required are the appropriate licenses, shotgun and non-toxic shells. Another option is to go to a quality outfitter out of state to see if you like it. Very solid advice right here!

Put a kayak in at Wind Creek on lake Martin and paddle up to one of the flocks of mallards. Might need to take a sack of rocks to throw at them to get them to fly as they are pretty tame.

When you think you can use a call go with some experienced guys and you will quickly realize you should have left you calls in the truck!!
