Where’d that info come from? I have never heard about fallow deer being introduced to Bankhead. There was 101 white-tails from Iron Mountain, Michigan introduced in 1925-26.

My granddad killed a white one in the early 70’s near Valley Head. It was an escapee from Sequoyah Caverns. Kept the hide hanging in his tractor shed for years. I always wanted him to tell the story. He must have told it to me dozens of times over the years. After he passed I asked my Dad to tell me the story. He said my Pawpaw shot the deers balls off. I never knew that. Pawpaw always left that part out.

Never have heard of fallow deer in Alabama anywhere other than the Black Belt and SW counties.

I killed a couple in Wilcox county back in the mid 70s. There were a lot of them in the Millers Ferry area back then, but they were pretty stupid.

We went look at a property in pine hill about 10yrs ago. The land owner showed us a ton of pics of fallow deer he had on the place. He said there was a breeding population in the area. He also told us that if we leased the property that they were off limits. There was some dang nice fallow bucks in those pictures.

I saw some in Wilcox county near Millers Ferry back in the late 70's and early 80's. I think they escaped from a high fence enclosure.

Outdoor Alabama - Fallow Deer
Under the section on distribution it says: "The first documented attempt to establish a wild population of fallow deer in Alabama occurred in 1925 in the WilliamB.BankheadNational Forest in Winston and LawrenceCounties. The last report of a wild fallow deer in that area was 1930."

Interesting. Wasn’t aware of that, even though I worked there for several years.
