I wear it, but I have multiple weights of it. Light weight, mid-weight, heavy weight, sweaters, hoodies, vests, and pants all made of it from Sitka., first lite, black ovis, woolrich, and evening midway USA brand. I wear the thin stuff when turkey hunting in 70 degree weather because it’s softer than my turkey clothes. Best base layer material made in my opinion. Doesn’t stink, dries fast, warm even when wet, soft.

2Dogs and FreeStateHunter, what weight do you use as a base layer? 150 gram is supposed to be for warm to cool weather, but upwards of 200 gram seems to be what others use in really cold weather. Thanks for your input. Don't know by grams but it's light to mid weight . I have two different brands. It's really great on those cool turkey huntin' mornings . When it warms up I take the top off.

i just bought some smart wool base layers. Suppose to be good. Will be my first year wearing it. At first glance, it is thinner than my polypro, and slick on both sides, so it seems like a good layering piece.
It is what it is.

I looked at some bins and a jacket. Gotta take out a loan to buy it. Anybody know a cheaper hook up?

I use a 220gm base layer and I love it. If the temp is going below 40 I carry a heavier layer (not sure of grams) in my pack. II'll start with it on top of the base 220gm below 30ish. I hunt mostly in Jackson County (NE corner of AL) near the Tennessee border.

Light weight base layers, and a mid weight 250 gram top and in usually good to go. The obsidian pant from first lite works well in warmer temperatures as well.

Thanks to all of you, I really appreciate it. I am going to buy merino wool base layer. I am still not sure of the weight I need. I normally wear a middle layer consisting of a slightly insulated hunting jacket/pant. I also use bibs/parka's that are wind and waterproof with insulation. My question is this: If you wear the 200 plus gram merino wool base layer on typical Alabama winter days, what do you wear for your middle or outer layers? I guess you could wear the 150 or less and still layer up pretty good. Just wondering what you guys put on for the rest of your layering in say 45 degree weather and wind with our typical 28-35 degree mornings. Thanks

If I’m wanting to stay warm, wool is the last thing I wear as a base layer.

Only wool I use is a couple German army surplus sweaters. I don't get cold.

IMO 100% Merino Wool products can’t be beat. I wear the Filson Heavyweight Merino Wool Thermals Upper and Lower on Cold Days and they are the best I have found and they last for years- Very Durable. I wear 100% Merino Wool socks all the time and have for years.
