I think hanging the ladder is the most dangerous time. If it rolls on you, it could be nasty. Best done with 2 men. One holding you steady at bottom.

On the distance I like to walk to my stands: “The first 100 yards is also the last 100 yards.”

I still use the 20’ ladders to get me close, and then finish off with screw ins to get me another few feet. Didn’t think anything of it back then at all. Exactly how I used to hunt before I slowed down on the bow hunting a couple years ago. Sold all my lock ons except for a couple I kept to leave in the duck holes for dogs. Kind of been getting the itch lately to climb a lock on with a bow though.

I have sorta done the same thing but instead of ladders I am just using my Summit climbers more than ever. I still have like 12 lock ons but with a bad knee that is apt to just give way coming up or going down, even with the life lines, I am leaning more and more on my climbers. I have 6 Summits so I will just hang them at my favorite locations and have at it.
Hate to hear that for you TC but it is better to be safe and hang around another day for the family. It is when I have to start hunting from the ground that I am not looking forward to.

I used the screw in steps for years. It wasn’t until recently that I started using stick ladders. By recent I mean last 10 years or so. I still use the 20’ ladders to get me close, and then finish off with screw ins to get me another few feet. Didn’t think anything of it back then at all. Now with a family and having a few more aches and pains than I did then I do think every time I cross that expanse between step and platform. that is exactly how I do it and how I now feel about it. My theory was always to make my stand difficult to get in so others wouldn't want to. Now I just pucker my butt and realize I'm not as flexible as I used to be.
