Not a lot of hunting and fishing architects out there. Not sure why. A few but not many. Lots of engineers tho and many like me are on here. Architectural engineer is not as common as architecture for a degree. I only know two that I can think of that I’ve worked with but a lot of architects. If I were considering building design, I would go either a true architecture or true civil/structural degree. Architectural engineering is kind of an in between degree and is much harder to use to get licensed in either profession. For what it’s worth.

I am in agreement, either civil/structural or architect. I’m a civil and been registered in several states for a while but can’t speak to architects. I know several tho and they are hunters...

I think you have to have some natural artistic talent to be an architect.

No doubt that helps with part of an architects function. Let us engineers design it and it will look like a bowling shoe. Functional, hell for stout but ugly! Haha.

I took an architectural drafting class. My professor said I should design house trailers because I had zero creative talent.

Architect is an old Indian word for “one who designs with no concept of reality....”

I can say that because my wife has a Bachelor’s of Architecture and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from AU. They’re all crazy in the head. They can dream it and then engineers have to translate it into a feasible design for real world application and construction.

Well my kid is 16 years old and has graduated high school. Has a 4.3 GPA. Scored a 33 on the ACT. And he landed a presidential scholarship with Alabama. AND he just decided to change his major from nutrition to architecture. Alabama has no architecture program. He loves to draw/paint. The kid has real talent with drawing as well.

This is his latest pic.

I am a Drafting & Design Instructor for the last 24 years. The fact that son has drawing talent will definitely help. The ability to visualize and think three dimensionally and express that idea is a large part of any Architecture/Engineering/Design field he might pursue. A large part of the described fields is industry specific CAD software. For Architecture, REVIT & AutoCAD are used a great deal. In the Mechanical Engineering field/Product Design, SolidWorks is a software used extensively....many of the parts created by 3D Printers are designed in modeling software like SolidWorks.
Alot of students have used my program as preparation to enter the above fields. If I can help you in any way PM me.

BTW......I bow hunt so I guess guess that I includes me in fold!

Just saw the paintings.......Your son has talent. His concept of perspective ,color/shade concepts are good. Are these paintings original compositions? The reason I ask is.....if he is visualizing this and putting it on canvas, he has what I call "the eye". That type of talent can be improved but it is hard to teach.
Really nice work 👍

The middle picture he constructed himself. He put it together on our kitchen table. Took a picture and then he repainted the picture.

The others were painted from a picture not taken by him.

With a 33 on the ACT, there’s a lot better options for him professionally. That’s in the 99th percentile. We architects and engineers are tradesmen compared to people who are in that intelligence range.

I don’t think lack of artistic talent is an issue in this case.

When I started at Auburn in '87, I wanted to be an architect, despite some folks telling me it wouldn't be right for me. After a couple weeks, I realized they were right. On to building science I went.

The professors, even back then, clearly espoused a leftwing agenda. I knew someone who based his final thesis project on a hunting camp. He later told me the jury grilled him about hunting and spent little time judging his design.

One more note.

Yes, architecture school is full of flaky, limp wristed types. The department of building science was in the school of architecture, and architecture students had to take several of our classes about structure design. They caught a lot of flak from us and the professors.

But some are good ol boys with talent and are lucky enough to realize this when young and take advantage of their ability. Some people would be surprised to know that the late Mark Whitlock, who built Mark's Outdoors, had a degree in architecture from Auburn.
