Can I mig weld with steel wire? Or do I need special wire/rod?

Won't hold with Mig. A 7018 will hold on cast just fine. Gotta preheat the cast first and allow it to cool as slowly as possible.
Whatcha welding?

Start a fire pit put your item in it. Clean & Weld. Return to fire overnight. If it is a high stress joint, it may be better to just replace.
