We live in Decatur and my wife has been offered a job in Montgomery. She'll have to be there 3-4 days a week so if she accepts the job we'll be looking for her somewhere to live. She doesn't mind driving 30-45 minutes and it doesn't matter to us which direction out of town she goes. The raise in pay can't be negated by the rent/utilities so we were thinking about a rental house out in the country. Is $600 doable in the area and be in a safe place and a fairly nice house?

Are you OK with a single wide or looking for a double wide? You'd be awful lucky to find what you're looking for.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Not the answer you’re looking for, but this doesn’t sound like a good idea to begin with.
Montgomery is a shithole. That 3-4 hour drive twice a week on top of the 30-45 min drive to work is going to get really old, really quick. Only living with your spouse for 2-3 nights a week isn’t a good long term plan.

I live in Millbrook which is near prattville, about 15 min north of Montgomery, I don't think you could find anything decent in the area for 1200 bucks with utilities in the area. The best area to live is the Pike Road area which is east of the city.

$600 month even exist? That sounds like bottom of the barrel. My little apartment in Auburn used to be $375, this was 3 years ago now.

look in Elmore County to live if you work in Montgomery and may God have mercy on your souls. $600 might get you a trailer in the country, it'll get you a house in the hood in the gump.
