For the bug a salt?

Ok - so we know that table salt has a grain size around the 120 grit blasting media size. With that in mind, we can do a few simple measurements. Filling a container with the same volume of roughly the same grit of different types of media can give us some interesting insight into densities. So far, garnet is the clear winner.

Tare weight of the container is 20 grams. We subtract that out. Each measurement was made with the container smoothed off level full at the top. I was somewhat surprised that salt weighs more than water.

H20 (water)................. 168g - 20g = 148g = 1.00 SD.
NACL (salt) ..................204g - 20g = 184g = 1.24 SD.
AL-OX (aluminum oxide) 294g - 20g = 274g = 1.85 SD.
Garnet (Garnet Baby!!!!) 316g - 20g = 296g = 2.00 SD.

A ten pound bag of garnet blasting media provides roughly 25,000 rounds for the bug a salt 2.0 lawn and garden fly gun. We intend to use this for dangerous game so we needed a denser and more angular shot charge than salt because the wasps and bees wear armor.

Red wasp testing will follow as soon as I drill out the tip to 9/32 or so - it's getting a little scarred so I know at least some of the shot charge is hitting it.

After measurement of the barrel - we also know it is .177. That means we can use slugs in it as well. A little testing shows us a steel bb will penetrate the shell of a snail at 4 feet of range. rofl

Does your pattern suffer from opening up to the modified choke?

It's not the barrel - it's a little shroud over the end of the barrel. The shot charge is hitting it at least some and causing the pattern to suffer. The barrel is .177 - a bb slides right down it smoothly.

You can take the shroud off, if it is the orange one...does make offhand aiming more difficult, though.

Yep - it's the orange one.

Mods I've done so far (only had it since Father's day) - safety delete with a small screw and snapped a piece of red string trimmer string into the front sight to improve the sight picture. I lost it somewhere so I'll have to get another and glue it in this time. There are some videos that show how to mod the safety by taking it apart where it works normally afterward but it looked like more work than I wanted to do at the time.

Considering putting a folding stock and maybe a reflex sight on it.

A sheet of tin foil works great for testing pattern and energy/penetration. The Bug A Salt 2.0 lawn and garden model will damage the finish on wood surfaces (be careful when in the heat of battle). The trigger is a PITB when making long, well aimed shots. Heavy and gritty. Have not found a trigger job mod yet.

Using the bug a salt will sure make you relearn racking a slide correctly. We need a fully automatic version.

First legit aerial kill. Also first legit dangerous game kill. Carpenter bee flew by at 3 ft, one round fired offhand, no aiming, right handed from the bug a salt made him into a walker. Another round immediately thereafter finished it off. 120 screen garnet blasting media. I was quite surprised that I hit it on the fly. Probably more luck than skill. I had been training left handed and killed a few flies but swapped hands so I could hold the weapon while I drank some water.

They are fast on the ground. Looked like a C-5 Galaxy trying to take off at full throttle with the flaps in the down position.

I had one arial kill on a fly yesterday with salt but I grazed it while it sat on a chair first then ran 20-30 feet after it as it was way slow/flew straight and it took three more rounds to hit it square so that doesn't count.

Best father's day gift in the history of gift giving - LOL.

Whoever does not have one is missing out. Get the 3.0. They eliminated having to take it off safety after each pump. And I agree. A full auto version would be nice.

Probably spray paint it some sort of plasti type. Have not decided yet (need to make sure it will last with me at the helm. I may or may not be prone to take them out in high seas and accidentally sink them due to rough handling - lol). Gundoc wants to do black and burnt bronze cerakote of course - lol. Would look great I'm sure!

Here's a video of a spray paint, rail, safety delete and folding stock job. Kind of sloppy looking but seems to be solid.

That's what I was thinking. It sure makes a mess of bees. Don't use any of the coarser grit - 40-60 will kill the gun in 30 shots or so. Glad my buddy found that one out. I'm sure it will lessen the life of them. Mine's at about 100 shots with the media and 400 or so with salt. Still works for now.
